I think you misunderstood me. I was attempting humorous social commentary directed towards the millions of people who don't think the sudden increase in tornadic activity has anything to do with anything... especially climate change.

Hopefully, you are not one of those people. If so, you can be mad about what I wrote.

This really is a tragic story. I'm an Eagle Scout so I've spent many summers at camps like this. I can't imagine what their family and friends are going through right now.

This is a highly debated issue, and as of right now there is no conclusive evidence either way on global warming's effect on tornadoes. So anyone that says that it definitely is or isn't the cause is simply wrong. Also, global warming is a long process, it doesn't all of a sudden double the number of tornadoes from one year to the next. It might play a part, but there is so much more to it that we just don't know about.

I believe in global warming, but anyone that pretends to think they know everything about our climate is fooling themselves. It's important to consider all the information and all the possible explanations, because if there is one thing that we can be absolutely certain of, it is that we don't know a damn thing about anything.

Well, then why don't we all just make some shit up...

The reason for all these tornadoes is that it has even been hot up in heaven and much to God's chagrin, all the angels have been leaving their fans running.

    We live in the mid-west?

There's a lot more people to kill now than there were back when. I can remember bad tornadoes with frequency back to when I was a little kid.. for instance the 1989 F5 Plainfield tornado.

I believe in global warning, but don't think it has anything to do with the tornado's in the news. There are 6x as many people now as there were 100 years ago. 6x more people to kill.

From the article I linked before:

"But as deadly as this year has been, it used to be far worse in the United States. In 1925, tornadoes killed 794 people. From 1916 to 1936, tornadoes killed an average of nearly 280 Americans a year. That's because tornado warnings were not as good, people couldn't hear them and housing was not as sturdy, Brooks said."

By comparison, there were 50 people killed in 1989. I do remember that Plainfield tornado though, even though I was only 8. More than anything that shows how far we've come at being able to protect ourselves.

Oh, and another thing to consider, while the number of tornado sightings have increased over the years, our ability to detect them has also increased. So is it possible that a higher percentage of tornadoes are being reported and the actual total isn't increasing? I certainly can't dismiss it. Not saying this year isn't abnormally high though, but it is abnormal since we've already passed the total for all of last year.

Me too. I have sons that age. I cannot imagine the grief of the parents. Not only are the storms seeming to increase, they also seem to be increasing in intensity. Even where I live, where tornados are rare, we have been getting more storm cells that can develop into tornados. About two weeks ago, my kids and I were on our way to the store, when the sky suddenly went black, heavy rain followed by very large hail. I immediately drove home, which was extremely difficult. The last time I saw weather like that I was living in Texas, and we did have a tornado.

For the sake of bringing in an differing view point.........how do you know this isn't some pattern and that has happened before...........well before we could even think about keeping records.............or walk upright
  • seems about the same to me, but then again I've lived in oklahoma and north texas for most of my life, right in tornado alley, so I'm pretty used to it or hear about them a lot more. Kinda funny, when we hear tornado sirens we don't go get in a safe hiding place, we go outside to see if we can see it

Global climate change is natural and it's happening and you should get used to the idea.
That said, I do think the media enjoys highlighting the tornados and devastating deaths, but there aren't actually more tornados.
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

Tornados were completely unheard of in Ireland until about 5 years ago... now we get 5 or 6 a year that cause actual damage. But yep, nothing changes.
