I need some advice on picking a lawyer. Is there any web resource where you can find a lawyer's record of wins, loss, reduction of charges and the such? Also curious as to whether if a lawyer who costs more is necessarily better or if lawyers who are listed on websites such as http://www.lawyers.com or any other lawyer listing service might be better or not. Help!

Can't answer all of these but the ones that cost more are definitely NOT better. I deal with many lawyers every year (real estate lawyers) who charge anywhere between $1500-$5000 to perform the same task. Almost without exception, the best ones I've dealt with (and continue to refer) are the ones in the middle price point.

    short answer:
there is no single place to find the information
and if the lawyer has settled many cases, that stuff is mostly confidential

google is your best bet-anything thats public, and electronic, involving that lawyer will likely be there

if you want to spend some money-
    lexis.com
enter the lawyers name and see what pops up-call customer service to help you refine your search

there is also the martindale hubble directory, buts the bios are written by the lawyers themselves

referral is still the best way to go
  • Thanks. I've tried the google search and haven't found a whole lot as far as court stats, just cases they've been in. I'm thinking I'll have to go with my gut on this one.

if its a criminal matter, a lot of that stuff is not available electronically

    new business idea: attorneystats.com
  • No it's nothing that serious. Yes that could be a good idea for a business. Any thoughts on how to judge if they are a member of a site like lawyers.com? Could that be because their practice needs more clients, hence the advertising-or are they just smart businesswise by getting their name out there more often.

Basically I am narrowing it down to one that was listed on lawyers.com (I didn't find their information that way) who is more expensive or another one that was referred to me by the local bar association lawyer referral service. Any thoughts?
