Ipod - Sync erased everything on ipod. Help. :)

So I put all my music on a portable hard drive. I've got a computer I just loaded Itunes on, and I downloaded a new tv show using itunes, but couldn't get it onto my ipod. I finally decided to sync my ipod... and it erased 100% of the music, but now the tv show is on there. wtf. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

In your itunes is there a little i next to each song?, if you transfered your music from you pc/mac onto your external HD itunes will now know where to find it, still thinks its on your pc/mac this happened to me and you have to click on the song then go find it and show it where it is.

what kind of ipod do you have? i have an 80gig classic and had a similar problem with an update to itunes not working so well with my generation ipod.

are you able to use itunes when you hook up your ipod?

do you get any error messages?

does itunes even recognize your ipod is connected?

if you are new to itunes, change the "automatically sync ipod" option to "manually manage music". once you do that, you can put everything back on your ipod and you shouldn't have to worry about losing music if you have stuff on your ipod that is not from your library.

There's no "i" next to each song on my external HD. When I select a song, it plays fine on the computer. I believe itunes knows where the file is (at least for the vast majority so far I've clicked on).

I have the ipod touch 32gb, the new one. The ipod is now hooked up with the usb and it does show it in itunes. Itunes is new to this computer, since my other computer has a problem with the wireless, so I put the music on an external HD, and now want to use this newer computer with the external HD.

So... I see the music in my library. I see my ipod under devices. I was unable to save the tv show I just downloaded from itunes to my HD by dragging it, so I decided to sync it, and it erased my music from the ipod, but strangely it saved the tv show to my ipod. I changed the ipod settings back now to "Manually manage music and videos".

...and I'm not particularly good at using itunes, so I could be doing this wrong, but when I manually select all the songs in my library, it does not let me drop them into my ipod, which is shown under devices. Is there another way that I'm unaware of?

Think I may have figured it out. There was a youtube video. I needed to click "sync selected songs only" or something, then I had to go into music library and check all music. It's now at copying 3100 of 6805. We'll see in another hour if it worked! It also said I had too much to put on so it somehow automatically is going to sync with less music, but I don't know which music it's going to drop to do that.

...btw, anyone know how to get DVD's (even copy-protected ones) onto itunes, from the physical DVDs? I want to start enjoying some my my dvd collection on the ipod.
