Am I nuts? A question for the HD-philes

I bought a high def tv a few months ago and I think it was the best purchase I ever made ($749 for a 37" 1080i).

I think the quality is so much better than standard tv. But here is the question I want opinions on. I was thinking about buying a Blu-Ray player (or an HD, but they seem to be dying) but I honestly don't think the quality is that much better than my progressive scan DVD player. I certainly don't see the need to run out and buy one for $300+.

I think the jump from DVD to BluRay is nowhere near as big as the jump from standard tv to HD.

Does anyone else think the difference isn't "that huge?"

I think the only time you're going to notice a better picture with the HD/Blue-Ray combo is when you get into your bigger picture screens.

I have the same size HD you do in a smallish family room with a DVD player and I think the picture is fantastic.

I have a friend that has a 50-something inch HD TV and a Blue-Ray and you can see the pores on football players faces it is so crisp. We popped in a DVD for the Fantastic 4 and you could see the pimples on Jessica Albas face it was that clear. But honestly, I think a lot of it had to do with the fact their faces were friggin huge.

Check out some of your major electronics stores to see if they have any 1080p > 40" sets hooked up to a Blu Ray or HD DVD player (keep in mind that the odds of HD DVD coming out on top of the format war are very very small, and getting smaller) and check out the picture.
Then have them put a regular DVD on to compare that to (hopefully the player doesn't upscale ;)).

forget about HD-DVD. Paramount should switch to Blue-ray within the year.

What problem? I bought a tv that was already too big fo my living room. I'm comparing the 480p dvds at my house to the Blu Ray display at Best Buy.

I'm sure it is TECHNICALLY 6-8X better, but the picture quality jump to a the human eye is nowhere near equal to the VHS-DVD jump

How do your porn tapes look on the HD-TV?

I'm guessing you have an LCD, right? If its like mine, it accepts 1080i and 720p signals, but displays them at 768p. From what I've read, unless you sit really close to your TV, it isn't worth getting HD for anything under 40". If you sit a few feet away, you'll notice a hell of a difference.

It looks like Blu-ray might come out on top, but I'm waiting until its a definite before I invest.

I'd recommend going with the HD. And 749 for a 37 inch TV sounds like a steal!
