Why such long gaps between albums nowadays

It seems to me that the average span nowadays is 3 years between albums for most bands (I made this number up but seems about right to me). What's the deal? See some examples below (and don't tell me they didn't tour..except Beatles in later years)
Zeppelin released 1, 2, 3, and 4 between 1969 and 1971. Hendrix released "Are You Experienced", "Axis Bold as Love" and "Electric Ladyland" in 67, 67, and 68.
I mean look at the Beatles. From 1963 to 1970 they released 13 albums. That's almost 2 a year!
* Please Please Me (Parlophone, 1963)
* With The Beatles (Parlophone, 1963)
* A Hard Day's Night (Parlophone, 1964)
* Beatles for Sale (Parlophone, 1964)
* Help! (Parlophone, 1965)
* Rubber Soul (Parlophone, 1965)
* Revolver (Parlophone, 1966)
* Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Parlophone, 1967)
* Magical Mystery Tour (Capitol, 1967)
* The Beatles ("The White Album") (Apple, 1968)
* Yellow Submarine (Apple, 1969)
* Abbey Road (Apple, 1969)
* Let It Be (Apple, 1970)

Makes sense I guess. Why put out a bunch of albums that people are just going to download for free. Why not tour off the same album for 3 years and play the same 10 fucking songs over and over and over.

but yeah, the touring and the money, thats the reason
I'm not sure how much control record companies had back in the 60's-70's. I assume not much since the Beastie Boys were able to sample near a thousand songs on Paul's Boutique- which was release 1989.

Yeah, that sampling is nuts. A listing of every song and the songs sampled on it: http://paulsboutique.info/songs.php

ding ding ding. we have a winner. bands make nothing from the albums now, with all of us downloading them for free and such. they only make money from tourning, so thats what they do.
its our fault really. the "fans".

Not all bands are in it just for the money. Some are creative and would put out at least some material, every year or so.

Now mainstream/major label acts are more pressured into releasing albums that have 12-14 tracks on them.
