How long have you worked for your present company?

I just had my 8 year anniversary working for my company (a software company) while most of my friends have job hopped every 2 or 3 years. I'm 32 years old now and it was kind of odd realizing I've spent 25% of my life working for a company.

  • after college I was in 1 job for 4 years (then I *had* to leave because they only had kids right out of college and PhDs), then I had another "transition" job for 1 year while I got my grad school shit together, then I was in grad school for 2 years (with an internship in between), and I've been in this job 7 months.

and believe it or not, I know few people who were in a job for 4 years by age 30.

6 years... I've moved a couple of times to different cities, so that has kept it a little fresh.

definitely not...and thre are pros and cons to both situations really. i've never managed to keep myself in the same place little more than 6 years. i always left each position by choice though, which is good. i was in 2 different schools, 1 for 5 years, the other for 6.5 years. i've had a few part-time retails gigs while studying and/or teaching, mostly summers....go about 3 years each. right now i am working in my very first 'office job' ever, and i am here 9 months. however, i do plan on sticking it out for the long haul. granted, life situations change so who knows...but that's my plan at the moment anyway. :)

my husband has worked for the federal government 20 years! he's only had 2 other 'real jobs' before. however, he is not in the same position....moved onwards to law enforcement 6? years ago. it amazes me he's been with it so long! good to have someone solid/dependable in the relationship. ;)

i don't think people ever leave government jobs. :p my dad worked for the government for 30+ years before retiring.

of course, my mom worked for verizon for 30+ years, too, which is where i am now. so maybe i'll never leave. lol. we have a joke around the office that if you make it to 5 years, you'll be a "lifer".

(of course things have been much more unstable around here for the past few years so i'm not sure that's an option anymore... )

funny you should mention that. my 10 year anniversary is this sunday. i've actually been working here a little longer than that because i was hired as a temp 4 months earlier, but they only count from when i was officially put on the books as my start point. i'll be getting a 10 year anniversary certificate and a book with a bunch of stuff and i can choose one item as a gift. i already know what's in the book, a woman i work with had her 10 year anniversary in january. it's down to either a small 3 disc stereo, a set of golf clubs (just the woods, not the irons), or a golf bag. i'm probably going to go with the golf bag.
