Are music videos irrelevant?

I can't remember the last time I saw a music video. Obviously MTV barely plays them anymore, and lately I've found most of my music from word of mouth from friends. Once in a while I'll search Youtube for bands I like, and am surprised they made a music video for a certain song, as I'm usually looking for live performances and never realized they had a video for a given song.

unedited version was what every teenage boy should watch :)
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

They, apparentely, are only irrelevant to the music video channels

    Amen!!!!

As for irrelevant??? I think it's probably a waste of time and money for the majority of the acts to create videos like they did in the 1980's-1990's...nobody sees them unless the act releases a dvd, and they are included on that.

  • Artistic videos are only as irrelevant as the film medium itself.

If they support the song and they are works of art, then no.. Case in point: any video by Sigur Ros or Elbow.

music videos are not irrelevant ... the old method of their "distribution", music television ... that's what is irrelevant.

Imagine a site like Pandora, but, with music videos ... I think something like this could work.

I don't think they are irrelevant. Look at the video for No More War. That's amazing.

They play it on vh1. Vh1 plays videos btwn 6am and 11am. Now whether or not you like the videos is another story entirely :) It's mostly pop music and things of that nature. And then Eddie Vedder thrown in for good measure :p

I think videos still promote songs and albums and hence forth are not irrelevant.

they also play a good deal of hip hop videos on BET, if you like that style of music.
and they play videos on MTV2 and on Fuse.

  • I think they might be better described as "stale" rather than irrelevant. It seems every other video I see has to feature a shitty, choreographed dance troupe that wishes it was doing Thriller instead, or a misogynistic parade of half-dressed bimbos. Often both. But the rare video that has a new or interesting way of framing a song makes it all worthwhile.

I hate music videos. To me, any pictures associated with a song should come from my imagination... there are great songs out there which lose their impact because their videos have left an image in my head that takes out all of my own imagination from the song. It's kind of like seeing a movie based on a book and then reading that book... you just can't get the actors from the movie out of your head.

For instance, the homo-erotic Oceans video totally ruined my appreciation for that song. :D

Not all of them. Some (well lots) are lame, but then there are really good ones. Such as NIN's 'Closer' video. It is one of the best ever. Or think of the Foo Fighters' Learn to Fly - hilarious. I love Outkast's 'Hey Ya'. There's some gems out there.

I think he means recently. MTV was still showing videos when those came out.

    Nowadays they are! ;)

Radiohead videos are supercool! Remember Karma Police, Paranoid Android, Fake Plastic Trees... I'm not sure if they still make videos anymore coz I donn't really watch TV much (in fact have not had MTV/cable since '98) and I can't tell what's fan-made, unofficial or official videos based on youtube.
