What do you think of the end? I felt bad for the couple who went to jail. Okay, one could say they kidnapped the child which they did. But You could argue that they were helping her get a better life that she never would have had with that pig mother she had. But who are they to decide that?
I see the point on both sides.
Sade ending with the mother leaving to go on a date and not even hugging or kissing her daughter. My wife got all choked up.
I think even though its hard he did the right thing. But my wife does not agree.

  • I think he did the right thing, as much as I hated the child having to be with her mom.

I liked how the ending left you wondering whether he kidnapped her himself.

Sade was in that movie? Did she sing Smooth Operator?

    I couldn't resist.

??? They did not do that. Maybe you thought that, but you did it on your own. I really doubt that thats what they were going for.

But I could be wrong. ;)

  • My husband and I talked more after this movie that we had after any other movie in ages. Sure he went with the law, but that kid was back with that fucked up mother who had not changed at all and treated her kid like a piece of furniture.

You could just see the look on Casey Affleck's character's face at the very end...he seemed to be thinking "did I really do the right thing?"

My husband even went so far as to say "I think he stayed with the little girl because he's a hero and he's trying to show that he'll be there for her". To which I called, bullshit. He was not staying with the little girl because he's a hero. I feel more like he stayed with the little girl out of guilt.

    What do you think?

Yea, total guilt. I think the child would have been much better off with the couple but, people can'e go around and do things like that. If the movie ended with him letting the girl stay with them then it would give strange ideas to fucked up people in this world and that can not happen.

  • It was so sad but what a thought provoking movie. The mom couldn't even name the little girl's doll and nothing really changed once she got her back. I still think he did the right thing.

I think that's exactly what they were going for - they left it wide open for the audience to have those thoughts. He's sitting there getting ready to babysit for her, while she carries on in the exact same way she did before the child was kidnapped.

hard movie to read cause I wanted to little girl to be safe and then when she WAS and with the police officer I wanted her to stay there. I know the laws the law but trust me...some people should not be parents

  • imo, the movie was totally unrealistic with respect to the child's reaction to the whole thing. No matter how neglectful a mother may be, a girl that age would not just accept these shiny new parents like that, and come running out of her new cabin house deep in the woods somewhere to hug them. She'd be totally confused and traumatized. But this is Hollywood, and the script is designed to make you feel like you can relate to kidnappers. I don't recall the child being excessively abused at all...her mom just didn't pay much attention to her. To me, that's not enough reason to snatch her like that.
  • I liked that movie too... it definitely made you feel that there was no right choice, but I do believe that he made the best choice.

It did make me hug my son a little tighter the next day...

in the book, she'd been with that family for months by the time they found her.

the book is excellent, by the way. dennis lehane is a hell of a writer and he has a whole series of books about patrick and angela. one of the best detective series i ever read. in the books, this case tore them apart.

    nobody won in this movie.

I don't think he did the right thing and you can see at the end of the movie he looked like he regretted it.

LOVE this series of books. The book was fantastic. Haven't seen the movie yet - how does it compare to the book?

i actually saw the movie a few months before the book. it was a good movie, though if i had read the book first, i think the movie would have disappointed me a lot. you don't get any sense of the history angie and patrick have in the books. angela in general is sold short in the film. and bubba is completely written out of the script unfortunately.

on its own as a film, it's not a bad movie by any stretch. but it's nowhere near the caliber of the book and if you're a big fan of the series, it doesn't really bring the characters alive like one might hope. like i said, it's a decent movie own, but not a particularly great adaptation for a faithful devotee of the book.
