    He was. He was actually hired to be a consultant on the film and then Kubrick was so impressed with him, he fired the original actor and then hired him. The original guy wound up being the door gunner that was machine-gunning civilians from that helicoper later in the movie.

    Almost all of his boot camp dialog was improvised.
