Dreads are said to hold a person's history, their life's goings on.
Alot of people keep them as a form of attachment.
Alot of people cut them off when they need to move on from something.

Locks are a cultural thing, seen in several different cultures. They can express the inner spirituality of the wearer (among other things) - though now it is also a trendy way to have your hair. And, contrary to a nasty stererotype, locks, like all hair styles, are kept clean very easily. Grant it, there are several religious groups where the devotees wear their hair in that way , that are forbidden to wash their hair, but that is not the norm.

I have had dreads now for about 8 years and I wash them regularly. They don't have to be dirty.

I did not post the pic b/c I think all dreads are nasty. i used to have friends with dreads, no big deal. But the one in the pic....holy cow. No way yours are that long?

But the title of the thread implies disgust... 'Can you imagine the freaking bugs in that thing?' Does that not make it sound like they are 'nasty'. Just look at the first few replies. I think it was a poor choice of words!
