He has a serious skin problem, he scratches himself so bad he bleeds. The Vet has tried a hundred things to stop it but no luck. We can control the itch with a steriod but it is only for a few weeks at a time. We have go back to it again b/c if not he is up ALL NIGHT scratching, he will walk five feet, stop scratch himself so bad that he will have bloody sores on him. It sad b/c he is a good dog, a Pug.
The Steriod is very bad for him but its that or he is extremely uncomfortable.
Poor guy.:(
Get em a Body Bag Yeeeeeaaaaa!

So sorry for him, that must be awful for him. What food are you feeding Rudy?

your dog needs to be referred to a specialist. yes animals have specialists too.
he needs to see an allergist/dermatologist. my cat went to one. your regular vet must refer you or pick one out of the phonebook and call there and ask if you need a referral. if there is no real problem, there is always prozac. my sister's cat was on it.

Good question... it really sounds like it might be some sort of food allergy. What are you feeding him?

Our pooch went through that very thing....turned out she was allergic to rice - and of course, we'd been feeding her Lamb & Rice kibble, so we switched to Fish & Potatoes kibble for the rest of her life and didn't have those skin problems again. The food is really expensive, but it's cheaper than a bunch of steroid shots (we went that way, too). Took about three or four years to find out what was the real problem...and we tried EVERYTHING...

Anyway, I am very sorry to hear about poor Rudy...having a dog scratch all the time is annoying as hell, and you feel sorry for the poor guy cuz you know how uncomfortable it is...

But yeah, change the food first (and add essential fatty acid liquid to the food) and go for more expensive treatment options if that doesn't work.

    Take care Rudy....

  • The food thing is actually pretty common... and don't be scared off by the higher price of the higher-end food. Less filler means you don't have to feed as much... you'd be surprised how close it comes to evening out in the long run. I have a Rottweiler and she gets 2 cups of Wellness food per day... she's been between 70-75 pounds for 2 years now.

I'm a moderator on a Doberman forum.....we help people with lots of different skin issues. The first thing we recommend is that you feed your dog the best possible food you can afford. That would be kibbles like Canidae, Solid Gold, Innova etc. You usually have to buy these foods in a pet store, or order them online. They use human grade ingredients to produce the foods. Make sure there is no corn or wheat in the food, better yet get a kibble that has NO grains, like Innova Evo. You could also consider feeding home cooked or Raw. I feed my Petey Raw, which is considered to be the healthiest best food you can give your dogs. Because Dobermans have so many health problems I have chosen Raw because it should help him avoid some of them and live a longer healthier life. Food issues in dog are huge, because of what is in the kibble. Companies often don't use the best ingredients and most dogs do not do well on grains, they are not natural foods for carnivores. Also add some high grade fish oil capsules each day. Some people believe that Apple Cider Vinegar also helps their dogs that have skin issues, my Petey won't touch food with AC on it!

You should consult a specialist too. Just remember....veterinarians don't study too much on nutrition in college. Just like in humans, better nutrition=better health.

    Good luck.
