Hubby and I might be heading to SLC mid-June...He'll be attending a course for three days and I'll be on my own...so I will need to occupy my time somehow...are there any big shopping malls, records stores, spas in the downtown area?

Keep in mind, neither of us knows ANYTHING about SLC...but we will prolly be staying in the downtown area...

Thanks so much!

Go downtown on a Sunday. Creepy. The whole place is deserted...

This made me laugh real hard.

The best way to describe it is any place in the U.S. circa 1955. I actually think I saw Eisenhower walking around.

Remember, you can walk anywhere, as long as you have the time.

There's just no alcohol in the drinks... If you ever need to sober up, go to a Utah bar.

I remember having to get "memberships" at a few of the bars.

I've been there a few times. It's an interesting place...I'll say THAT!

There are plenty of bars in SLC. I live in Vegas and, because of my wife's family, we go to SLC probably 4 times a year. I like the place a lot. More than this shithole!

For music, check Suede, USANA, the Depot or concerts at Red Butte.

For alcohol, check Piper Down, Squatters, the Porcupine, Uinta or the Bayou. They do have some very bizarre liquor laws but you'll figure it out.

For the best garlic burger ever check out the Cotton Bottom in Holladay. Sit a picnic tabel, drink a few pitchers and make fun of the yuppie Harley riders.

One more thing.... I like the Sugarhouse area much more than Downtown. They do have a light rail system (Trax). It's not great, but it will get you to a few places.

P.S. Make sure you read Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer (think Into the Wild) before you go so you know what you're getting yourself into.

Salt Lake City is BEAUTIFUL! The weather is amazing & the place is CLEAN and the views out of the city are incredible. If you go up to the capitol building you can see until the earth curves about 30 miles in the distance.
For a few day trip it's great- they built a ton of great restaurants and shops before the Olympics, so you probably won't get bored. There are great bars and decent beer if you're into that- although I could be wrong I believe it is 3.2 beer out there.
Going out to the Lake is awesome, although not swim-able, it's a nice drive and a site to see. Beware of the sulphur smell though.

If you have lots of time to kill & you're a genealogy junkie, you can check out the Family History Library... most of that info is online now.

I used to go to SLC a lot for training in my last job and I loved it. On the weekends you can go hear the Tabernacle Choir, which is quite something. Temple Square is sort of touristy, the Mormon Visitors Center is OK- if you go just be sure you don't write your name down on a little card because missionaries will call you. Although, they are super super nice, and if you're in Temple Square, when someone tells you "Jesus Loves You" sometimes it's hard not to believe them. Ha.

You definitely don't need to read "Under the Banner of Heaven" before you go. No one will try to convert you when you step off the plane- and might I say what an incredibly narrow minded thing for someone to say.

I am no fan of the LDS faith, but you're really not "getting yourself into" anything by going to SLC. Rural Utah is a little weird, but in Salt Lake City, Mormons are in the minority. Look it up. :p

    P.S. Avoid Provo!! :D

Well considering Colorado City is in Arizona & about 300 miles away, it probably wouldn't be one of the first stops on the tour bus.

Thanks for all this great info, everyone!! Keep it coming...

We'll be driving from Vancouver BC...and I'm not sure which route we're taking... (i.e. thru Canada and then south or south and then east)...we're gonna check out all that Moab stuff (hubby's a mountain biker)..and then I don't know what else...in SLC I'd like to find a really good spa...

Anyway, thanks again for the info!!!

That is the best actually :) I used to always longboard downtown on Sundays. I could've done it naked and no one would've noticed. :D

Good info here. The Cotton Bottom is the Shit! Even have green buns on St. Patty's day.

Also rent a car and drive up Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. For night life, stay downtown or head up to Park City for a night. It's usually pretty warm all day and all night around that time of year.

Favorite bars were (don't know how many are still around) O'Shucks, Liquid Joe's, Port O'Call, Twilight, Wings and Things, Harry O's, Red Rocks, Bricks, & Hog's Wallow.
