True, but there was a history that has made them rivals. When the A-10 started, Villanova was in it. It left to join the Big East in 1982 when that started up and the A-10 replaced Nova with St. Joe's which were rivals going back to the early goings of the Big 5. That the fact many people from St. Joe's and Temple blame Rollie and Nova for the death of the Big 5 just added more heat to the Nova St. Joe's rivalry.

The rivalry probably isn't as big with students as it is with alumni so I see your point. But I don't see Nova - St. Joe's not being the biggest rivalry in the city anytime soon.
i'm well aware of the rivalry. ;)

just saying...when i went to 'nova the big east was amazing and had a lot of the top players in the country with ray allen, iverson, kittles, john wallace, etc., playing in it. very competitive with teams playing for not only the big east title, but national championships. the games we wanted to see and traveled all over for were the big east games.
but i am also well aware other philly schools consider it a big deal and love to hate 'nova. just isn't really how it is anymore for 'nova fans....at least not any of my friends.

duke sucks they just shoot 3's

heels are built for a longer run in the tourney

the shooting will catch up with duke

also ther heels were missing their guards ,which would help defend the 3's

that being said duke shot lights out and won

    we'll see them again soon

i'm not a duke fan but got to go to a game at cameron last year. what an experience! amazing game against va tech that went into overtime and one of the coolest sport environments i've ever been a part of. i can't imagine the energy in that building for the unc game!!!

No offense, that's part of the reason why a lot of the Philly locals don't like Nova. I mean you told me before that you've never been to the Palestra. Roy Williams brings Kansas and North Carolina there, Illlinois has been there when they were number one in the country and lots of other big schools schedule a road game at a mid major like Penn just so their kids can see how historic the arena is. More NCAA tournament games have been played there than in any other venue in the country. St. Joe's Nova tix were going for like 150 on stubhub on Monday at the Palestra.

It's just that Philly thinks Nova has forgotten its roots and moved on from the City Series whereupon if it wasn't for the city series Nova wouldn't be where it is. It's a catch 22 for Nova. Because in one sense it has outgrown the local rivalries, but in another sense by putting conference rivalries ahead of its local ties it turns off the local fans.

Case in point, when St. Joe's was undefeated a few years ago, the city was behind them on sports talk radio except for Nova fans, but when Nova had that run and lost to Florida the support wasn't universal.

Personally, I have ties to all 5 big five schools so I root for them all, but growing up in the city, I'd say Nova is the least the supported of the Big Five teams.

Then again, if I would've taken that offer from Nova and went there instead of Penn, I might be seeing things from a totally different perspective. My high school yearbook even had a typo in it and had me attending Nova after graduation ... lol.

Nah, it's all good. I just like arguing with someone who is passionate in their cause which most certainly my favorite Nova fan is. ;)

  • btw...i HATE duke. HATE. Passionately. HATE. My favorite thing in the world was watching Rod Sellers piledrive Christian Laettner's head into center court back in the 90s. Awesome.

I don't believe I've seen a better post. This is music to my eyes.

I hate Coach Ratface. HATE. HATE. HATE.

I will always spread my hatred of Duke to anyone who will listen. Coach Krap is a good coach but not the messiah like most make him out to be. With all the talent he's had through the years you'd figure, if he's such a great coach, he would have cashed it in a few more times. In my book that 2001 title was fucking garbage. It was basically handed to them by the refs and if you weren't wearing Dook colored glasses you could plainly see it.

Also, if Coach Krap was such a great man the 94-95 season where he had his "back issues" and had to take a leave of absence would appear on his record and not his former assistants record. He is a fraud.

I hate Dook too as I'm one of the biggest UNC fans out there. However, it's silly to do the shoulda, woulda, coulda regarding winning NCAA titles. You could do that for any great coach not named John Wooden.

In my mind Dean Smith is the greatest college basketball coach ever, but he only won two NCAA titles and how many great teams did he coach? Granted, I can think of at least three years as I'm typing this that one of his UNC team's should have won the championship. Nevertheless, Smith only winning two titles doesn't negate that he was a great coach. It's just pretty damned hard to win it all.

I do 100% agree with you about the 94-95 season. That was pure crap.

Since when do the games that you don't coach count as part of your record? And like markymark said, UNC has had more talent than Duke over the last 25 years or so and has less to show for it.

I hate how jealous people are over Duke. They've always been a class act and yet get crucified for it. I know it sucks to be on the losing end, but you didn't hear us crying in the mid '90s.

As a fellow Tar Heel fan I understand what you're saying. It just pissed me off because I nearly had a breakdown during that game.

Yes, I was pissed off too. I almost needed to go buy a new tv after that game. Good thing the remote slipped when I threw it, as it only left a slight dent in the wall instead of shattering the TV screen.

That, and it also doesn't hurt that Penn has been a good mid-major program in the recent past and a program that a UNC or Illinois could expect to face in the tournament.

I'm fairly certain that UNC wanted to play there because Wayne Ellington is from that area. If its possible and can be worked out on the schedule, Roy Williams tries to schedule games close to a player's hometown if they are fairly far away from home.
