Best computer security program?

I'm looking for an all-encompassing anti-virus, spyware... one in all. Of course, Norton, AVG... I'm familiar with the big names, but I would like someone who really knows this stuff to recommend one. It would be just for my personal laptop. Thanks!

    all in one:

    ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7.0

    i don't have it because i currently use Norton and other programs.

    i would definitely get Windows Defender also. i never rely on just one program.

    I wouldn't recommend an all-in-one suite...mixing it up gives you more security imo. A combo of the following should be fine:

    AVG anti-virus free edition
    Windows Defender w/ real-time protection
    Spybot (free edition) to run weekly scans

    This is basically what my computer guy recommends as well. He said no one program looks for everything or is good at everything. :)

    I use Symantec Anit-Virus along with Adaware SE (freebie) along with Mozilla Firefox for my browser, and I never have problems.

    If you've got Norton, uninstall it. It's shit.
    You can download 'AV personal edition'. It's free and updates daily.
    You may also want 'Sygate firewall', 'Adaware', and 'Crap cleaner'. They're all free and should prevent any problems.

    Me as well. Never had a problem.

    Also it's a good idea to have at least 2 email accounts. 1 for your personal contacts and online banks/purchasing/etc. Then 1 for website logins, one time store orders and such. That will prevent you from getting spam in your main email account and it'll keep you away from unwanted .exe files getting sent to you with spyware.

    I have the norton virus stuff and microsoft spyware (which comes free with msn)...I guess it works....then again I don't do a lot of downloading and I don't open up junk email....

    Go with Trend Micro for anti-virus and Spysweeper for anti-spyware.. NEVER USE ANYTHING THAT IS FREE! Anything that is free is usually spy-ware in itself. People don't work to protect your computer as a non-profit hobby.

    That said I'm running nothing. Use Mozilla and some common sense and its hard to get spyware or viruses. Use trusted sites and lay off the porn downloads! lol.

    That's rediculous. People all over work all the time on great free software, and that doesn't exclude security services. Most free apps people have mentioned here are great.

    P.S. - You should google "trusted sites".

    Most free apps are spyware though :) Some just actually work like they are intended to. I use a free adware and free spybot, but there are many free apps that are nothing more than spyware. You just gotta be careful of what you're dl'ing.

    I know. I'm just saying it's ridiculous to say "don't use anything that's free".

    I run avast for my antivirus http://www.avast.com it's free and it's excellent!

    Spybot and AdAware to clean up. Also just got cccleaner as a percaution!

    I've used Symantec / Norton before now, wouldn't install it again, its crap, total pain in the arse. I use AVG Anti-virus (free), Adaware (free) and Spybot (free) and the all do the trick. My BT modem / hub has a built in firewall so I'm ok there, but Zone Alarm seems to a good one, also free. Looks like these are the most recommended on this post

    While anti-virus and spyware are needed these days, I prefer to use a hardware device for my firewall. By using hardware devices, more resources are free on your PC.

    I'm using Avast anti-virus and Microsoft Defender. With Firefox, spyware isn't too big of a deal. If using IE, I recommend something a little more robust for spyware, like Ad Aware.

    Just my 2 cents.

    I was just gonna write something like this in response to the previous post about firewalls. Hard firewalls are definitely best. Set up an old box on OpenBSD, and yer gold.

    Yea buddy. Or buy a Linksys router and put a linux based firmware on it. :D

    Looks like there is a lot of free stuff that works, but will they clean up a pre-existing mess? The free stuff I have says I have problems, but when I click "fix it" I have to pay for the fix! What's the deal? (thanks in advance for responses!)

    i am biased because i work for Trend Micro...but Consumer Reports rated our solution #1 in all catagories for AV, Spyware and SPAM... PM me if you want more info...
