    the decide/determine reigns/helm, etc, isn't really grammar, it's vocabulary :). In that vein there's the sleater kinney song "pristina" that bugs me that goes "while the other girls fondled their dates she fooled around with a bunson plate." It's a Bunson *burner* and a Petri *dish*...there are no "plates."
