What is Jamaica is like, and what to do when there? I tried daydreaming about but could only imagine a bikini and Aunt Jamima carrying fruit in her turban.
I was swimming in the Great Barrier Reef
Animals were hiding behind the Coral
Except for little Turtle
I could swear he's trying to talk to me

I have 2 friends who recently had their honeymoons there and would never go back.
They stayed in resorts and were warned not to leave the resort without the tour guides or on a bus tour. When they did go to the local town they were hounded by people to buy stuff and if they didn't the people got very pushy and scary. The vendors and shop owners would not take no for an answer. They said driving to the resort was the scariest drive because they were driving through the worst conditions they had ever seen.
I had always wanted to go there and I had previously thought about for my upcoming honeymoon, but decided on Puerto Rico instead. It also has its ghetto areas but it is still overall pretty safe.0 -
I think it definitely depends on where you go there. My cousin went on his honeymoon there and they absolutely loved it. My old roomate was from jamaica as well and had some pretty good things to say about it."Everyone is a patriot in some form or another.... i prefer the intelligent ones."

Lots of people go on their honeymoon there and love it but they never leave the resort.... I just don't see the point in going to a beautiful place and staying on an amercanized resort. I want to go shopping in the local towns and eat at local restaurants and not be in the lap of luxury the whole time, but I also want to feel safe.0

I've never been, but Id really like to go. I dont care if there poverty, I want to expirience the real jamaica. I went to the bahamas, and my favorite part was when we went to downtown freeport. It was totally normal, no tourists at all, we were the only white people there which made me feel kinda awkward, but still I loved it.
But back on subject... Never been, sorry
Pirates had democracy too.

The people of the real Jamaica are not going to hurt you... Negril/Ocho Rios are beautiful and the people who tell you that its scary are just saying that because they are used to comfortable and normal USA. I had a blast going up into the mountains, talking with the locals, and at the resort of course. Thousands of tourists go to Jamaica every year... when was the last time you heard of someone getting robbed, kidnapped or worse? Just don't disrespect them, and they won't disrespect you.
And a helpful hint... you can buy ANYTHING from the dudes that come by the resort on a shitty old boat trolling by the beaches. They are honest and just trying to earn a living so don't be scared... again no disrespect.
With all that said... I would definitely avoid going to Kingston. Stay on the west side of the island.Everything not forbidden is compulsory and eveything not compulsory is forbidden. You are free... free to do what the government says you can do.0 -

Precisely. I wouldn't be scared to go there, but I wouldn't take my wife and kids there.Snake wrote:Why avoid Kingston? Crime and stuff? Just wonderingEverything not forbidden is compulsory and eveything not compulsory is forbidden. You are free... free to do what the government says you can do.0 -
Jamaica was an amazing vacation... i went there with 19 other guys for spring break when i was in college. we stayed in negril. it definitely is dangerous.. but i liked that:D kept me on my toes..
i witnessed a guy die (electrocuted himself working on the power lines) and nobody even batted an eye.. he stayed hanging up there for over an hour before they took his body down. it was awful.
we did so much tho. best snorkeling i've ever done.. ganja cake helped:D tons of fish and coral! we went cliff diving, saw ziggy marley, jumped down the waterfalls that were featured in Cocktail, and partied our asses off.
it's not for everyone though. i wouldn't go there unless it was spring break or you were staying exclusively at a good resort in ochos rios or montego bay. one of my friends pissed off a coke dealer and the guy threatened his life and tormented him throughout the week. he would tell you he didn't like Jamaica...
and yes.. DO NOT go near Kingston! no tourists go there unless they want to get mugged or worse. atleast that's what our jamaican friends told us.Whoa, chill bro... you know you can't raise your voice like that when the lion's here.0
