I am taking my open water certification so I can SCUBA dive on my vacation.

Should I take the ocean dives here in BC's cold water, with excellent instructors, or in the Caribbean's warm waters? The former would allow me to enjoy the Cozumel dives, as opposed to instructive dives. The latter referral program costs $150.00 more.

i am a certified diver.. take the open water dives in the warmer water... you need to take your mask off and clear it... the water can be REALLY cold... trust me on this.. it is worth the $150... also, think about it this way, your visability in BC will suck as compared to unlimited visibility during your certification dive in COZUMEL...

I got certified in NY and i could not see my hand in front of my face... I have been to Cozumel 3 times... it is a divers paradise... trust me on this one... you will never want to dive anywhere near BC after you see Cozumel.

I say get certified in cold, crappy visibility water so that every dive after that seems like the experience of a lifetime.

It's like Navy SEAL training. They have a summer training class and they have a winter training class. The winter class graduates have a little something extra under their belts when they graduate. They trained in frigid, stormy waters whereas the summer trainees had it somewhat easier. Still rigorious training in any season, however.

I got my NAUI Scuba cert years ago in sunny southern california.

I think my certification course was a bit different from the average course because it was held on a navy base by a former Marine instructor.

Before he would let us get out in the open ocean water, he made everyone swim endless laps in the base pool (the same one that Navy SEALs train in) both with and without gear.

Even the seasoned military guys in great shape were huffing and puffing towards the end. I was 16 at the time. It was sort of an honor to be neck and neck with commissioned naval officers.

Anyhow, I think an experience like that left me better prepared.

But, it's all the same really.
