are you like wanting touristy things, educational, slack jawed drunken revelry, or nature based????

I used to be in the san Fran area - now i am in the lower part of Cal

okay so - you have to do the following things!

go to the SF MoMA - the modern art exhibits are just wonderful...

The Legion is a great museum - has such a wonderful feel to it...the thinker is there...the actual grounds are great - the building is fantastic and the view of the bridge and the ocean is just *speechless*

you have to day hike Inspiration point...it is just absolutely awesome and a super easy walk.

Alcatraz is kinda neat for history but if you ask me - you are that close I would give a good nod to the Coastal REDWOODS

give a history nod to the mission...

and of course the Castro, and Market

    oh don't forget China town...

there are some pretty good Dom shops (duh) in the area and not all of it is playing up for the tourists...

I don't know if it's under $300 but Hotel Triton is gorgeous
it's across the street from the Chinatown gate

I lived out there in the late 90's.

I liked the Alcatraz tour, you take a ferry out there and it's historical and educational and the views from that island are incredible.

also for nature, Golden Gate Park is beautiful. and you should see Haight street and the Haight-Asbury area.

Fisherman's Wharf is super touristy, but for nature-y, I think it's Pier 45? or one of the piers, I don't know if they still have this but they had a pier where there are a ton of sea lions

Ghirardelli Square is where the Ghirardelli chocolate company is based and they have an ice cream shop that is out of this world

    I also really like Chinatown..

oh and North Beach, that's the "Italian section' where the beat poets hung out (I think one of the places is Cafe Vesuvio?) and check out City Lights bookstore

there's also, I think it's called the Presidio? but there's a park near the Golden Gate Bridge that is really nice.

oh yeah and you can ride a cable car! that's fun.

and OMG, they make the best burritos in the world in the Mission district.
    Castro is fun too
that's the 'predominantly LGBT' area. You can ride the F Market street car down Market street to get there.

oh and avoid the Tenderloin (TL) and Civic center areas, they are high crime areas

Berkeley is really nice to visit and you can take the BART

I have heard good things about Sausalito but it's super pricey

If you like baseball, make sure you see a Giants game. The Giants might be very bad this year but their ballpark is beautiful. I saw three games there in August 2006.
