  • Ever wake up from a nap, look at the clock, and wonder if it's morning or night?

It's not a real nap unless you wake up with no idea of where, who or when you are.:p

  • Yeah, man!
I once called my work all in a panic, telling them that I would be an hour late, only to find that it was 7pm, not am. They were just as confused as I was.

I have sleep apnea, so I have to take naps. I'm always tired.

How do you find out if you have sleep apnea? I pretty much wake up every hour or so all the time. Not currently sleeping w/ anyone who could check for me either. ;)

I was wondering that too. I've heard of it before though, when people stop breathing in their sleep. Apparently my boyfriend is the kind of person likely to suffer from this. (In his case because he's over weight and smokes). Is this right or is it something completely different? :)

Here is some info for you. I looked into it because my guy suffers from it so I wanted to know more about it......

The Greek word "apnea" literally means "without breath." There are three types of apnea: obstructive, central, and mixed; of the three, obstructive is the most common. Despite the difference in the root cause of each type, in all three, people with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times during the night and often for a minute or longer.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the rear of the throat collapses and closes during sleep. In central sleep apnea, the airway is not blocked but the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe. Mixed apnea, as the name implies, is a combination of the two. With each apnea event, the brain briefly arouses people with sleep apnea in order for them to resume breathing, but consequently sleep is extremely fragmented and of poor quality.

Sleep apnea is very common, as common as adult diabetes, and affects more than twelve million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health. Risk factors include being male, overweight, and over the age of forty, but sleep apnea can strike anyone at any age, even children. Yet still because of the lack of awareness by the public and healthcare professionals, the vast majority remain undiagnosed and therefore untreated, despite the fact that this serious disorder can have significant consequences.

Untreated, sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain and headaches. Moreover, untreated sleep apnea may be responsible for job impairment and motor vehicle crashes. Fortunately, sleep apnea can be diagnosed and treated.

If you don't have a bed partner that could let you know, the best thing you could do is go to your doctor and tell him/her about the problems you're having. If he/she think you need to be checked, they may send you to a sleep clinic where you would be observed sleeping and then a diagnosis would be made and treatment prescribed. It can be a life threatening condition, so get checked if you're really concerned.

I have sleep apnea and I've had it for several years. I've had 3 sleep studies done. The first 2 studies results told the docs that I needed surgery.....which I had 2 years ago.........didn't work. :( I had a 3rd sleep study done and now I am supposed to sleep with a machine that forces air down my throat so I DON'T stop breathing. I've had the machine for about 6 months now and I rarely use it. I feel like darth vadar when I have that thing on. It is supposed to make me sleep better, fall into a better sleep so I won't be so dangerously tired during my AWAKE hours. I honestly haven't given that machine a fair chance because it's so uncomfortable to sleep with. I feel like it keeps me awake more at night so how could it possibly help? From the people that i've talked to that use one of these machines, they ALL SAY THAT IT HELPS 100%. I really need to give it a fair shot. I can't get thru the day without a nap. Most days I'm so tired by the time I get home from work, I fall asleep without even feeding my poor children :( I suffer and my kids suffer.
