Netflix on Xbox 360 Live

Well, I just updated my xbox 360 with the new update and I will have to admit that I am very impressed. But the greatest part is the new partnership with Netflix where I can watch a good collection of movies and TV shows instantly. I thought that the quality would be crappy or that it would constantly be buffering but it works amazingly well.

I don’t have the fastest internet collection, but last night I watched three episodes of Weeds and part of Dog Day Afternoon is stunning HD. It only takes about 20 seconds for it to start. Amazing!

All of my childhood technological fantasies are starting to come true. Up next: HOVER BOARDS!!!

This really is a great idea.
  • I'm thinking about finally giving Netflix a whirl now that this is available. I don't expect to get the HD though because I only have a 768 DSL wireless connection that is on another level all the way across the house... lol

I would give it a try. I have cable internet but it is not blazing fast. I was surprised how well it worked after reading on CNet that it was terrible. If anything, you can get the free trial subscription and try it out.

Not to hijack your thread, but I have a PS3 (guessing it's pretty similar) and when I rent a HD movie, I just like it "buffer" the movie for about 10 mins before I begin watching it so I don't catch up and have to wait.

Not an issue with SD movies as streaming works perfect.

Oh, I also have a pretty fast cable connection.

I read this earlier in the week.
Did they get this resolved yet?

They have several plans but the cheapest is $8.99/month which gives you one movie out at a time and unlimited access to the streaming selection. You can go to their website for a free trial.

It works pretty good. I loaded Singles and watched a little bit of it.
The camera in the beginning credits were a little shaky, but that's it. Worked fine otherwise.

    Not yet, I don't think.
Sony said it is licensing issues, and not specific to the 360.

You'd think as strong competitors, Sony would be like "Uh no, you can't stream our movies to the 360." If they wanted to be jerks about the whole thing they could really limit the number of available titles, as Sony has a huge hand in the film industry.
"You don't allow us in game music, we won't allow you our movies on XBL."

But I suppose Sony makes a lot of money from Netflix. And if they want to continue to use Windows on their Sony Viao laptops, they might have to make an exception there too.

I am not using it and haven't tried, just read that stuff about the Sony flicks being unavailable through 360-Netflix.

After a weekend of messing around with the new Netflix option on the 360 here are some notes and observations:

    • With my cable internet (average speed) it takes about 20 seconds to buffer and start. I’ve had zero problems with quality or slowdown
    • If you skip forward and backward you will have to wait another 20 seconds.
    • It has a nice resume and progress feature
    • HD quality
    • The selection is limited due to licensing issues, but there are still almost 12,000 titles to choose from. I expect it to get better as time goes on.
    • If you have a netflix account, this is a free service. I’m not sure if it matters if you have a Xbox silver or gold account (I have a gold account)
    • You pick your queue online and then it shows up on the xbox
    • Every episode of A-Team, Knight Rider, and Airwolf are available. I would have been happy if this is all they offered.

Considering I already have a 360 and Netflix account, this was an early Xmas gift. It also coincides with Direct TV finally providing me with local HD channels after waiting for 2 years (I had given up hope several months ago).

The technology gods were very generous to me this weekend!

    Is that so?
    Hmmmmm......
  • i run on wireless, and from my room (where the xbox is) i get low signal. I watched No Country for Old Men on netflix with the 360 and didnt buffer once and the quality was perfect. I'm very pleased.
