NYC Scalpers Outside The Venues

Do not buy from these jackoffs!!! Last night I went to the Black Crowes show at Irving Plaza (it was amazing by the way) and a couple of really cool people in front of me as well as this nice guy behind me all bought scalped tickets from people on the corner ranging in price from $80-$120/ticket. All were turned away at the door. It made for a bittersweet evening as I had been talking to all of them for almost two hours outside only for them to be left in the dust. I specify NYC scalpers because I have bought tickets from a scalper outside of the venue in both California and Oregon with no issues whatsoever. I know buyer beware and all that bullshit, but if you must buy through a scalper, use a reputable one or just don't go. Anyone ever bought from a NYC scalper outside of the venue and actually gained access to the show? I'd love to hear about it. Fucking scumbags!

I know it happens all over (even the places I bought from out West). It's just I feel bad for these folks. If it was a hard ticket you can usually tell with the shitty attempt at a TM font that they just haven't been able to master. But now with those email tickets, it seems much harder to tell. Expensive lesson learned for all.

That stinks. Not really any way to avoid that, unless you stick with scalper and send in one person to see if the tix are legit. Then if they're not, beat the crap out of the scalper. I don't know.

Take a photo of the person next time...if they refuse, they are guilty of selling fakes!

Its sad, but nowadays the risk of counterfeits or "blinkies" is much higher than ever. Ticketfast tix can be printed over and over, and counterfeiters can make excellent reproductions of hard tix with computers/scanners etc. Its getting so you can't trust common street criminals anymore. No honor amongst thieves.

That's the only time I wish I could've gotten onto a tour bus for only the drugs!! Usually it's groupies/backup singers first then drugs. But seeing how the Crowes back up singers look like they were Knicks Cheerleaders in the '40's I think I'll stick with the greens.

I've always been in favor of the 'no physical ticket project'

You might be wondering what I'm talking about..

It's alot like what some pro teams are doing with their season ticket holders, but it could work for everyone. It would pretty much eliminate scalpers because there is no physical tickets floating around, it also would allow more people to see shows or events.

Basically, when you buy a ticket using credit card you just swipe your card when you enter. It would work b/c your card has your info on it. Say I purchased 4 tickets, and I'm going with 3 friends...well we just enter together. (obviously they will need to keep strict rules on tampering with your personal info)

If you pay with cash they can just issue you a swipe card that you will need to show with your ID when you enter...that is easy

But how this benefits people is, say I buy 4 tickets to a concert and the night before my dog dies and I don't feel like going, and my friends who were also very close to my dog can't find it in them to go. I could just go online and reissue my ticket for someone else. There will be alot less wasted tickets.

Now, in my perfect system there would be only minimal scalping. I think scalping is stupid and I can't stand people that do it, but I also thing early birds should be rewarded. If venues could allow a 15-20% increase in ticket price on their site the week of the show, and 30% the day of the show.

So that is my system. It will never happen but I would like it. And it's not just season ticket holders scalping others legally (like the Cavs' flashseats basically is)

I like this idea, but wouldn't the forging scumbags just be able to create a "cash card" to swipe?

I have bought tix to Ratdog at the beacon 2005 and had no problem

but those were old fashioned ticket takers-NO SCANNERS

I would never buy from the "street scalpers" that you see "working the venues" effing scumbags all of them.

I will not go to a venue, especially in NYC, without a ticket.

Always better to pay a few extra dollars than have a bad experience.

NOTHING worse than being outside a venue without tickets.

I guess technically, but you should be hit in the head if you buy one from them. If the only way to get one is at the door when you enter with your ID, how could you use a card of theirs without their ID?

Exactly!!! I paid a bit more than I wanted to for my ticket, but it was from a powerseller on ebay with 100% positive feedback. As to the people being outside a venue without a ticket, I could never do that if tickets were available by some other means. This couple last night had a sign stating that they were from Atlanta trying to score two tickets. I'm sorry, but those folks are a little too spontaneous for my liking. Who the hell travels over a 1000 miles without a ticket?!?

Brokers would just reissue tix to customers, it might help with street scalping, but wouldn't solve other forms.

True. But at the end of the day, if you must go through a scalper and get raked over the coals, the least you should be able to do is know that your ticket is real. Scalping, as bad as it may be, is legal. Selling useless pieces of paper on the streets of Manhattan (or anywhere else) should be punishable and enforced (but good luck with that as I'm sure it's pretty low on the polices to do list).

but brokers don't normally rip people off by selling fakes.

Plus, it couldn't work if you had to show ID or use your credit card to enter. The brokers would only be able to go themselves and enter if they used their credit card

What about folks who line up at outlets and the box office when tix go onsale and pay cash? (It does still happen)

you realise that the guys outside the venues are also the powersellers on ebay?
there was fake/stolen tickets at the Astoria as well.
They would have been at the Vic if it hadn't been for the 10c system which made it impossible..though I heard of fake wristbands.

the only reason I hate the front of venue scalpers even more than the internet ones is that they intimidate, even threaten, the people that try to sell at face to a normal person...I'm going to end up in a fight with them someday..
