The synopsis of the story was only posted, but in the story I read on Monday about this it said that the 71 year old guy chased the 19 year old kid 6 blocks in his car, hit him off his bike and broke the 19 year old thief's hip and instead of calling the cops or asking for help at any point he stood over the 19 year old with his gun loaded and opened fire.
The 71 year old guy claims he had bad eyesight and didn't know where he was aiming even though all 7 shots hit the back of the head, in an eye, under the chin, in the chest and neck.
Personally I think the 71 year old was right to chase the guy down and should have left it after hitting the 19 year old with his car and called the police. Shooting 7 times including reloading his gun at one point was excessive as we don't execute people in this country for stealing which is exactly what the 71 year old did.
i think he was just firing warning shots to get the kid to stop.
He shot the 19 year old after he broke 19 year old's hip with his car. He shot through one eye, two in the neck, one through the front and back of the head and two in the chest.
I don't think those were warning shots.
I understand the ring had great sentimental value - it was an engagement ring from years ago from a woman with whom things ended badly, but he still murdered the kid. After he had broken the kid's hip in center city (the main business district) he could have very easily called the cops instead of shooting the 19 year old.

I agree, maybe bust him in the face a few times, but shooting the kid 7 times while crawling on the ground like that is fucked up..
'I want to hurry home to you
put on a slow, dumb show for you
and crack you up
so you can put a blue ribbon on my brain
god I'm very, very frightening
and I'll overdo it'
That is cold. If that kid was your brother, you'd feel differently.
I was just thinking the same thing. It's always easy to talk tough when you're not personally involved, but I bet if this kid was someone's dumb little brother they'd think a lot differently. A boy was killed for stealing a necklace. This is old testament shit. Should stoning be acceptable punishment for stealing a potato?
I agree, maybe bust him in the face a few times, but shooting the kid 7 times while crawling on the ground like that is fucked up..
The kid wasn't even crawling from the witnesses who saw this. He was just lying there after getting hit by the 71 year old's car.
Police were only a block away and came after they heard the shots were fired. All he had to do after he hit the kid and got his jewelry back was call the cops. Getting the gun and shooting a motionless body 7 times is just horrible.
That is cold. If that kid was your brother, you'd feel differently.
no i would not feel different and i will explain why.
i had a brother who died of aids...he knew the risks of his life style and accepted them. at his funeral i could not cry. mom seemed upset by my "coldness" so i explained to her. i can not feel sad for him, he knew the risks.
i was 12 when this happened.
live and let live...unless it violates the pearligious doctrine.

Regardless, i'd feel sad in the above scenerio, but everyone is different..

interesting that it took this thread to make me realize how sad i still am, not that he is dead but he was not willing to make a change...all he had to do was increase his odds by wearing a rubber.....

I'm sure the 19 yr old kid had some serious sentimental value to someone, too.
Exactly.
I mean fucking hell, shooting someone because you feel threatened is one thing but hunting them down and unloading 7 bullets into them is murder. His crime is INFINITELY worse.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

infinitely? i dont think so.
face facts, his name was Jamil and he lived in Philly...a life of crime was not far away.
defense of property is not justification for using mortal force
He shot a person with intent to harm without the threat of imminent harm to him or another person

That is one of the most most closed minded things I have ever read on this board. Jamil Burton had never been arrested, just graduated high school - this shooting happened summer of 2006 and grew up a block from where I did.
This is why our justice system needs a complete overhaul.

Way to stereotype.
you forgot to mention that he robbed an old man...yea, great kid.
you forgot to mention that he robbed an old man...yea, great kid.
So you really are justifying yourself in saying that you think because his name is Jamil and he's from Philly that a life of crime was awaiting. The kid made a mistake and obviously didn't know there was an $18,000 dollar ring attached to a chain. I'm not condoning the kid's actions at all, but what he did does not mean he was going to become a career criminal.
If you really are that close minded and racist, I feel bad for you.

I can agree with that...but I can't feel sorry for the kid or his family. Guess I'm just a cold son of a bitch.
hahaha...yes, 7 warnings shots directly into the kid. how's that for a warning?
I'm not calling you cold, but I do feel sorry for the kid and his family.
I'm also not trying to argue or anything. Just stating how I feel.
but it is that fear that drives me to stay in top condition, so i can defend my family without a weapon.
