Anyone else think that tatts are becoming increasingly lame and cheesy. More and more people are getting them just to get them. Any time I discover a tramp stamp on a chicks lower back it's almost a sign of a girl who can't think for herself.

I do think that tattoos and tattooing is an art form. Like all art though, the ratio of crap to quality is astronomical.

Why are there tv shows about tattooing? I don't get it.

  • I don't have any tattoos yet, but I plan on getting something Pearl Jam related. It's obviously something close to me, so I don't think anything along those lines would be "cheesy".

However I get what you're saying. I had friends in high school that just got random crap on their bodies.. tribal symbols, barbed wire, one friend got Chinese letters on his leg, he didn't even know what they meant, he just liked the look.

Anyway, someone getting something that means a lot to them is cool. Friends, family, jobs, hobbies.. stuff like that is always nice to see.

Tramp stamp haha, I find the tramp stamp kinda sexy on a beautiful woman but I know what it means they have been the town bicycle. To me it looks sexy, but I would hate to think what it looks like when they are 80...

  • Ya, young beautiful women can get away with most things. I think snl had a skit about a tramp stamp remover.

It's funny when a friend gets a stupid tattoo and shows you it. What do you do? I just say 'right on' and change the subject.

I went to a music festival the other day here in oz and it was a pretty hot day and resembled more of a bad tattoo festival.
I only lied because it was the easiest way to get what I wanted.

  • As with all art collecting, it's all about whether people can distinguish real artistic expression from complete tosh. The difference is that if people are undiscerning and choose tosh, they can't just take it down off their wall.

  • It's just like any other cool thing really...it got commercialized. That's all. Same as rock music or body piercing.

When I get one, it will be big, expensive, and meaningful. Although I would probably look damned good with a tramp stamp..

I see cheesy tattoos on people that I don't think are art, tramp stamps and the like. I see beautiful tattoos on people but it was their choice to get them so who am I to say? All of my tattoos mean something to me, I had given them a great deal of thought for a year or more before each one. Each of them put me a year behind in donating blood so that factors into my decision as well. Maybe you would find them cheese but since it was my choice and I don't see you in my circle of friends and famiy, I don't care what you think. I'm sure my tattoos will be faded and saggy when I'm 80 but so will everybody else's. :)

  • I really, really want a sleeve... but I'm getting major opppsition to the idea from my family. I'm trying not to care and do it anyway.

That argument doesn't work. By that age, you're body is going to look like a sailors palms anyway.

    BECOMING lame and cheesy??!!

They became lame and cheesy at least 5 years ago.

Nevermind that they are very unattractive and (to me) a big turnoff.

"Tramp Stamp" :) Great description. Can always tell the tattoos that have been an in and out pick a tat ones.I have many tattoos. But go to a highly skilled artist with great intergrity. She has a range of stuff she will not tattoo and ALL her tatooing is custom work after two consultation appointments. She is a true artist and I wouldnt go anywhere else.I put great thought into my tattoos and they are an art reminder of major events in my life.
Its the trashy, get them cause everyone else has them that brings shame on truly beautiful body art.

I have one finished sleeve, got it over 5yrs ago and now I'm working on my other arm, a few more sittings to go and it'll be done. My family wasn't thrilled about the idea either but they accept and love me for who I am.. Ultimately it's your body so you should do what you want, just make sure you think it through before going ahead with it.

yeah, they're pretty well hidden. But I do have the aforementioned "tramp stamp". It's Japanese kanji for "put beer here". ;)

I think it's going both ways.

Watching LA Ink, I've seem some fantastic original as well as some great classic work being done.

However, I think since tattoos have become more acceptable more people are running out (typically during some big life change) and declaring "who they are" with a piece of flash work from a shitty artist.

People need to research their artists and give it some thought, unless they truly don't care what ends up on their body. - Like Kat Von D letting that dude from Jackass tattoo a skull on her. But, that's just her style.

I gave great thought to my first tattoo. I drew it on myself, etc. However, I did not research the artist. I just went to the closest place and ended up with a tattoo that will eventually end up covered by something bigger. Oh, well. At least I like tattoos and have used the experience as an excuse to daydream about what else will look great there.

Oh - and I'll never understand the "Think about how that will look when they're old! Ewww!" argument, 'cause old skin doesn't look that rad anyway. So, who the fuck cares?!?

Tramp stamp - Yeah, I want one. I think we see a lot of them because tattoos shape particularly well on certain areas of the body. There is a lot that can be done in that space, just like there are a lot of different things that fit onto an upper arm. Good tattoos flow with or sit well on the person's body. It's art, it's on display - even if only for private viewings. :p

My tramp stamp will be somewhat inspired by this - http://slavetotheneedle.com/tattoos/erika/erika-5-lg.jpg - and will flow up into my ribcage. Can't wait, just need to iron out the details and save the funds.

BTW - if you don't like tattoos, don't get one. And if you don't want to be with someone who has tattoos bring the subject up on the first date. ;):D
