Ok so the closes i've come to surfing is bed surfing in VERY moderate waves on the east coast.. (u know, where you blow up one of those twin/rug size 30 dollar inflatable beds and take it out in the ocean?) And even that shit really kicked my ass...

Looking at people who get those HUGEEEEEEEEE ass waves , makes me want to do it and then again, makes me REALLY really scared to try it.

I dunno, waves that weigh A HELLUVA alot more than i do, a few feet taller, possibly crushing every bone that a body can have.. I won't even get into my fear of jaws type mo fo 's biting my face off. i just , yeah i dunno. Please someone tell me that its okay and inspire me to be not so afraid, because it looks like SO MUCH FN FUN.

(copied this over from the other board, im putting my toes in the water over here :) *deciphers if it is room temperature or slightly freezing*

Listen Mandi, I have been surfing for the last 8 years or so and even I'm not ready for waves like that. Surfing takes a lot of practice, balance and patience. Trying waves that big, such as a halfpipe, as a beginner would mean serious injury or even death. Not trying to be a downer to you, just a realist. But, not sure where you're from, but at a lot of water parks they have the halfpipe simulator where you are on a boogieboard and a constant flow of water is coming at you like a wave. If you dig the ocean, stick to the 6-8 foot waves. They are more fun and come with less risk. I used to live in Jacksonville, Fl and those were the average size waves on Jax beach. Went to Hawaii's north shore in 06 and was like "Fuck that" No way was I trying that.

oh yeah for sure! baby steps baby steps.... I want the least amount of risks as possible :D What i think i really need is a someone i really trust who is good at it to show me, that'd probably make it alot more fun/safe ......

Take a lesson. I spent two days at Cocoa Beach with an instructor for a few hours and it was worth the money. Not only did I feel much safer, I was able to get up much faster than on my own. He has his eye on you the entire time and if you wipe, he is there to pick you up. It also doesn't hurt that instructors are usually in their early 20's and nice on the eyes. They also let you try the equipment so you know what to get if you decide to buy equipment.

You just gotta bite the bullet and get a board and get out there. And just dont let the big scary days, choppy days, and currents discourage you. I'm kinda new to surfing, but every once in awhile there's that perfect swell that just sends shivers down your spine.

oh, and btw, I've been out when it's like 6-7 at most, and nothing bad happened. Then just a few weeks ago it was a perfect clean 2-3 foot swell and i let me guard down. I fell off the board backwards and it came back and hit me in the head. 10 stitches on the first day of my vacation. boo!
Pick up my debut novel here on amazon: Jonny Bails Floatin (in paperback) (also available on Kindle for $2.99)
