Record Players

I asked this in a different thread but nobody answered, so let me ask now. To those of you that own record players and actually listen to music on them, do you prefer the sound to cd's, and why? What is the difference? I love the look of LP's, but I haven't listened to one on a proper soundsystem in ages. What is a good record player to buy these days?

  • i dont know anything about which is the best or anything but i just bought one for about £80 (no doubt its shit though) but i just find the sound it gives is somewhat richer and just plain nicer than my cds. In comparison to cd i would just say cd is TOO clear if there is such a thing, my records have a bit of a dirtier sound to em that i like :D

(wow, i bet that really helps  ;) )

the sound of vinyls (not all) is better, warmer, more profound.
Listen to Benaroy or ITW and you will udnerstand what I mean.
I have a pro-ject turn table and I'm really happy with it.

"warmer" that's the word i was looking for when trying to explain why i like the sound, thanks :D

I've heard records have a "warmer" sound, and maybe I'm an idiot, I'm just not entirely sure what that means. The last time I owned a record player I was listening to Thriller and the Rocky IV soundtrack. It looked like a little red suitcase.

I was just thinking I've got all of these PJ singles laying around, might as well put them to a good use. :D

Plus, I want to be that guy with the cool record collection. I'm already that guy with the cool cd collection. :D I download (legally) occassionally, but I guess I'm old fashioned in that I like the visual aspect of a cd or more so vinyl. I like to read the liner notes, look at the pretty pictures, etc.

i cant explain the beauty of the sound other than using "warmer or richer" its just a more welcoming sound for reasons unknown to me ;)

  • *to any other "experts" * -

if i have a fairly cheap player and get a better stylus thingy will i get a better sound from it?

Or is it all to do with the mechanics of the player i have? i.e. like the saying goes "ya cant polish a turd" so i would be wasting money getting a new needle thingy ma jig sort of thing? :D

    (such knowledge i have)

  • Don't know if a stylus upgrade would make a great difference on a low end player, not sure? If you've had your existing stylus/needle for over 6 months and use it regularly, just getting a straight replacement makes a noticeable difference.

"Warmer" generally has to do with the fact that vinyl is analog while CD is a compressed & digitial signal. By definition an analog source should have a higher quality signal than a digital source, as analog in its truest form is as lossless of a recording as you can get. People usually define CD sound as crisper and punchier compared to their equivalent vinyl release. There's just a digital shen over CD recordings that a lot of people find irritating. Personally, I love a well mastered CD, but to each his own. A good sounding record, especially something like a 180 gram or 200 gram release, can sound amazing if mastered well. Unfortunately records degrade over time, little by little after each listen. CDs may degrade, but in a different way. They don't get the same pops and cracks of records.

This is where SACD and DVD-A come into the picture and effectively eliminate the need for cumbersome vinyl. Some may disagree, but the 2 new formats are amazing and also offer 5.1 capabilities.

  • Personally, I've never heard any vinyl that would compare to SACD...not even close. But it's a matter of personal taste I think.

There will always be vinyl purists. At this point I think it's all pride.

  • I think of the sound of vinyl as "thicker" it sounds heavy (and warm - that descriptive works too) and more dense...it has many different layers of sound - additionally, there is a nuance that is missing from CD's.

to get a really good comparison I listen to LA Woman, on CD, Vinyl, and my Ipod and the vinyl is the deepest sound. I only listen to ipods because of convenience....

a good system to get is Thorens - as for turntables... the sound itself I think has more to do with speaker options...Thorens (the one I have anyway) has a lot of speaker hookups...so it's a good one

I've never listened to SACD so I can't compare. What I alos like with vinyls is having the cover in big...

When I put Zep II on vinyl in the livingroom and I'm in the kitchen it sounds like Plant is actually in my livingroom singing. That is the difference between disc and vinyl.

Well, first you need a system that can handle SACD discs (and/or DVD-Audio discs). That's a whole different issue altogether.

There are a good amount of titles in both formats, but not nearly as many as I'd like to see. Rumor has it Sony is going to try and push the SACD format one more time and see if it finally takes off. I have maybe 100 hi-rez discs, 85% of which are SACD and the rest DVD-A.

Did Pearl Jam release any SACD or DVD-Audio albums? I know they release everything in vinyl. My dvd player can handle all formats exept vinyl - it won't fit.

The only PJ-related music you can find on SACD is Eddie singing a few songs w/ The Who on their "Live at the Albert Hall" SACD.

I'd kill for some PJ SACD releases. Ugh. C'mon Sony!!!
