why don't we have them here? too much bandwith or something like that?

    The mods discourage all unnecessary bandwidth usage so I suppose this includes avatars.

    Plus they aren't really necessary and just cause pages to load more slowly etc.

    It makes it harder to be on the pit at work or school too with pictures of the band, Steve Buscemi, or really just any pictures.

    Exactly. I can't log in on a couple sites while I'm at work because some of the avatars might be considered inappropriate.

    I guess if you don't have an internet connection at home, it would be necessary to login while at work or school.
