Work permission in the US?

My girlfriend is having a research stay at harvard, boston next atumn.
I would like to join her and get a job of my own in boston.
Does anyone know how I get a one year work permission?
Just in case anyone knows about a job, I'm a building carpenter.

    or a student visa

    enroll in some classes

    student visa is much easier and less expensive to get

    yes.

    No such thing as a "one year working permission"
    You can get married, or you need some organization (educational or otherwise) who will sponsor you.
