    edit: ok... so now that i've read that, thats really really sad :o

    coming from the daughter of a Japanese man, i can tell you its crazy how much my father works. Lately, especially since working on Vancouver Island (more laid back than the mainland i think) he's sort of learned its okay to have time to yourself to relax, take days off, have a pint with friends, etc. My mom (who worked in Japan for 8 years) always tells me about how its completely different... however its different on both sides - the employee and the employer i mean. Not sure if its still the same but I think a lot of companies treat their employees well... she said at one of my dads parties at his old job they gave away laptops and vacations as prizes! Well, at least they have good staff parties....
