Weight Watchers

I need to drop about 15 pounds (would love 20) and I know what I have to do, but am not motivated at all. Has anyone ever done Weight Watchers? I'm looking into things that will keep me motivated, like going to meetings.
I'm afraid if I do something online I will just give up soon after. I have done that so many times in the past! But I figure if I put some $$ down I will be more "willing" to go the extra mile so to speak.

Has anyone ever actually gone to the meetings and if so what are they like? I feel pretty pathetic, but after 40 your body changes quick...and not for the better. I need help ASAP!!
Thank you fellow 10 clubber for saving my ass....again!!!

i'm on it right now & in the exact same boat as you, 15-20 lbs. its nice to be in a place with people just like you, experiencing the same things. its tough at first, to just dive right in, but if you go to your meetings, exercise, count points, and stay on the program, it WILL work!
i'm in a bit of a rut with my weight right now (after summer, i've struggled to get back on the bandwagon), but i'm starting to pick up the weight loss again.
i suggest at least trying it :]

EDIT- meetings (at least where i live) consist of chairs in a semi-circle, and a leader who talks to you for about 30 minutes. we talk about weight loss tips, motivation, and all other types of tools you can use to help you reach your goal.
oh, also, DO NOT feel pathetic. there are a good number of people older than you there, and everybody (like i said before) is experiencing the same thing as you

It's a really good program. I started it a few years ago, had a goal in mind and being over 30 with body changing, what I was doing before wasn't working any longer. I lost what I wanted but more importantly, it gives me tools to eat and feel better for life. I'm a life time member now but still go to meetings monthly for new tips, different ideas people have for snacks, working out (not just the gym!), hearing other people be successful. My leader usually has some funny stories of her own journey, motivating info. I eat far more fruits and veggies than I did before, cook more things, I found it to be a big help around the holidays (plan before you go what you really want!) and the biggest thing is the mental aspect. I love food, enjoy my junk food at times, enjoy some alcohol at times, definitely love to dine out but I've never considered WW a "diet"...just a healthy eating lifestyle that includes lifes indulgences.
believe it or not, we don't "need" anything. that is only the spoiled brat in us trying to fill some temporary solution to an emptyness that does not exist.

Ahh, can I drink a glass of red wine a day or will that gobble points and/or a no no? Very important question!

  • I lost 6 stone on Weight Watchers and yes, I stayed to the meetings.

I found the meetings to be very helpful as not only do you encourage each other but you also pick up some really handy hints... sad? Maybe a little, but if it wasn't for some of the hints, tips and encouragement i'd picked up at meetings, I certainly wouldn't have been as successful as I was.

I still need to lose weight. It's funny how i'm on a plateau now I don't go... I haven't lost weight for ages, haven't gained either, just stayed the same... :o:rolleyes: maybe I should join again, it might give me the motivation to lose that nagging 20lb too :)
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

I still drank like a fish on Weight Watchers... but I counted everything!

For a while I did the Core Plan which gives you free foods and a weekly points allowance. I used to eat nothing but free foods all week then save my weekly 21 points for a good old drink on a Friday/Saturday night ;)

I still drank on the Points scheme, I just ate more low Points food (like salad and soup) and saved my Points for drink.

Be careful though! The first few weeks, my body was adjusting big time and I didn't realise that my drink tolerance had lowered... I got shit faced :o

    Good luck!! :D

Just started back up yesterday. Lost 35 pounds last year on it and maintained well until the past two months. Put back 20 pounds in 7 weeks (Yeah I have been on a binge).

So back to counting points and meetings (with the Mrs., a lot easier to do it with someone).

The things that work for me are
1)Going to a meeting a week with the same people. That way you can see the progress and setbacks as a group. As Sian said above great tips and the leaders are usually well trained.
    2) The WW snacks and ice tea mix packs are essential to me. Drink flavored water all day long. Keeps me from snacking.
    3) I like to eat the same thing for breakfast and lunch so i know the point totals. I eat at work at my desk.
    4) I like to save the extra points for the weekends so that I can have one meal where I go off counting.

    Good luck to you!!

Great point. The products avaliable there are great. Sometimes they're expensive but they're worth it... especially if you need a chocolate fix as all their bars are pointed and low in fat and calories :)

Good luck to you, BlackD! :D

(because to this thread i've decided to go back next week... i'm actually looking forward to it :o)

    Ohhhhh feeling brave are we?!

    Rightfully so ;)

The only thing you have to remember with a gym is that you won't always lose weight but you may lose inches.

Oh and if you're planning on working out, I recommend the Core Plan on WW. You can eat a lot of carbs as most of them are a free food... I used to do it when I was training for a big run or I knew i'd be mountain biking a lot that week. :)

I love the fact that on WW you can chop and change between the food plans week by week :)

OK, I did some more of my own research, going to a meeting tomorrow night. Jeez, its right down the street, I could walk there. I am such a "gotta have it" hound, so I will probably buy the starter kit and all that stuff. I don't think it will be too much more money. Should I get the calculator? Read good things about it.

Congrats to everyone who has had some weight loss in any capacity. I have never really had a problem with my weight. Always have been pretty happy. But I know my body, and this is not the way I want to feel. It is more about feeling good. I am at the high end of a healthy weight, but tipping to overweight and trying to nip that in the bud. My eating habits have gone out of control and that is my main goal. There is heart disease in my family, and I collect fat in my middle. My pants are just too tight!! Will update after my first meeting!

Had a nice PJ fan PM me and wish me luck too. Thanks!

  • Weight Watchers is really good "the first time". I lost like sixty pounds on WW the first time a tried it...in just like 8 months. But after a few years of slacking I put the weight back on and tried to get back into WW, but couldn't stick with it. I had more luck with the South Beach diet, down 120 pounds from my heaviest now.

I did very well on Atkins. Got almost too skinny, then went on vacation and boom, Atkins was bye bye for good. To restricting! I don't know how the hell I did it for a year. I had real ice cream and never looked back! I need structure, get back to eating well and feeding my body the right way, then I can go at it on my own. Just need a jump start is all!

it will gobble some points but you learn to choose other stuff more wisely to fit those glasses of wine in!!! I have dinner and martinis with my mom every Thursday. Occasionally we go out to dinner. Lots of veggies/low point foods on Thursdays during the day in preparation!!!! It's the tools and tips you learn that make it a good program. Good luck and keep us posted!!!!

OK, did the meeting today. Got a little buzz from it I must say. The leader has lost 105 pounds and kept it off for over 5 years. When I saw the before pic I couldn't believe it was her!
So, I liked it. Did not go for all the "stuff" to buy. They didn't push it at all! With all the paperwork they gave me today, and all the stuff I have to go through online, I may decide to pick some book info up later or on ebay. Right now I have to make some decisions about what to eat tomorrow to stay in my point range. Going for the points first to get the hang of things, then may switch when I get better at my choices and adding the gym time back to my routine. So the first goal is 10% of my weight. I think I can do that. Its about 14 pounds. Then after that I have only 6 more to reach my "ideal" goal.

So far I picked 1 cup Kashi cereal w/ 1/2 cup 2% milk and a banana, Turkey sandwich with lettuce and tomato on ww and the free snack they gave out at the meeting today, 1/2 cup cottage cheese and a pear for snack, and a Smart One dinner. After all that figuring I need a break at night!
I think if I do my meal planning I'll be OK. As long as I have tomorrow down I have plenty of time tomorrow afternoon to get some mix and match meals together!

I hear you on this. My best suggestion - join an excerise group if you can. When you add excercise+diet = weight loss. I have dropped the lbs with this plan. Also managed to do 3 triatholons this summer hootie who!
Let me know if you need any suggestions!

  • The basic philosophy when trying to lose weight is:
YOU HAVE TO BURN MORE CALORIES THAN YOU'RE CONSUMING

There is a website out there that's an excellent weightloss resource. After quitting smoking, I used it and dropped 10 lbs in 3 weeks.

If you're serious about losing weight you gotta check out http://www.sparkpeople.com

It gives you your own food tracker/diary (counts calories for you & recommends menus WITH SHOPPING LISTS) and and exercise diary - cardio & strength. It tells you how many calories certain activities burn, along with workout recommendations, etc. Just login, signup, and off you go! I would highly highly recommend it. It makes you accountable for everything that you put in your mouth (down to a piece of gum!) There are interesting groups, conversation threads...hhmm...wonder if there's a PJ fan club??!! You'll meet lots of fun interesting (MOTIVATING!) people along the way.

Best of all - IT IS COMPLETELY FREE!
If you stick to it, I'm telling you - you'll lose weight.
    Good Luck!
There are three types of people in this world: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened.

We do not inherit the earth from our parents. We borrow it from our children.

I think this is great as it's free and (from what you have said) obviously works, but i'd miss actually going to meetings and being weighed. I'd miss getting tips, seeing others people's faces when they do well and consolling those who don't.

Maybe i'm just a traditionalist but I tend to lose weight better if I physically do it with other people and see the results... oh and if I have to make excuses for why i've gained 1/2lb one week :o There's something terrifying about knowing you've over indulged a little too much and you know you have to answer to a weight watchers leader :o

I am looking forward to my next meeting, the leader sends an e-mail on Sundays to give a reminder of the last topic and a preview of whats coming up. I think if I stick with it for a while I will get my food consumption and portions under control. Thats my main goal, to set up a way of eating from now on!
Like I said, I'm right on the "overweight" border line. My points a day are 19 with an extra 35 for the week (if I want to use them). Well, went to Hooters on the weekend and gobbled up 15 of those extras, but have managed to have the rest unused. I have not really done any exercise, I put my kayak away for the winter, and am just figuring out the point thing this week. Next week I will add activity and add the activity points. It's easy, but takes a while to figure all the points for the foods I like and all that. Should be an expert by Christmas!

Oh, and sometimes I'm hungry. But this is turning out to be a good thing as I am more conscious of what is going in my mouth and looking forward to eating more nutritious food.
