er... i need a little help for an assignment i am doing as part of my mba course.

i would like to know the names of some top companies which have got into fuckups with government and/or organizations like greenpeace/uno regarding issues of CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.

off the top of my head, i could think of oil companies which have caused major oil spills, companies like gillete which got into issues with wwf and peta for testing their blades on furry animals, even tobacco companies which have had lawsuits slapped against them for being peddlers of lung cancer etc etc.

but i need SPECIFIC examples, like XYZ company got penalized by so and so organization/government for such and such offence.

all contributions welcome and gratefully accepted.

Not sure if this page cites specific example, but S/O was the first thing I thought of to prevent what you're examining.

Why don't you check out the bastards at James Hardie? Seeing as they've denied and ignored their responsibilities only to be found guilty and then charmingly screwed people over for the compensation they were ordered to pay only to then shut up shop here and flee overseas to further avoid their responsibilities.

And if they don't do it for you what about Rio Tinto?
What they've done in New Guinea well, it's just mind boggling really, although I think they've been slithering their way out of it for quite some time.

Might be a bit old but IG Farben and their relationship with the Nazis sounds like a good example. Pretty disturbing.

    You're welcome. :)

Although both have been found guilty I'm not sure that either will ever actually be held accountable.

I believer at some point BP had an Oil pumping station in the North Sea which either had depleted all the oil in the area or they decided it was of no use to them. So BP decided they would just destroy the pilars it was standing upon and let it sink into the sea. Greenpeace climbed on the structure and stayed there until BP decided to let the oil station intact.

Ford has faced numerous penalties for the Ford Pinto in the 70s. And also the whole Firestone tire flap in the late 90s/early 2000s

thanks for that, though i will have to google for the exact lowdown.

ok i have received lots of examples of companies that have flouted social-legal-environmental norms. thanks everyone.

now i need a bit different kid of help

    1) i need examples of governments or other political bodies (uno, eu) TIGHTENING THE SCREWS against a company or companies, and thus forcing them to act responsibly. For example if any of you know of any instance of some government mandating that logging companies should re-plant so many amount of trees, or fishing companies release so much of er..fishlets, etc etc.

examples where a government (including provincial/state govt) or political body forced companies to behave themselves

    2) i need examples of economic reasons why companies have been forced to behave. like for example chavez is trying to come up with a pan latin american trade zone or something that will prevent 1st world MNCs from siphoning away the natural wealth of latin america. stuff down these lines.

i have enough examples of how companies have been forced to behave due to enviornmental, legal, technological, and socio-cultural reasons. i just need examples of POLITICAL and ECONOMIC reasons. can anyone help ??

    lawsuits were filed against FOrd??

    From Wikipedia:

In September 1971 the Ford Motor Company launched the Pinto for the North American market. Through early production of this model it emerged that design flaws could result in fuel tank explosions when the vehicle was subject to a rear-end collision. Some sources even allege this safety data was available to Ford prior to production, but was ignored for economic reasons.[56] Either way, a major scandal followed with the leaking to San Francisco magazine Mother Jones of the notorious "Ford Pinto Memo", an internal Ford cost-benefit analysis showing that the cost of implementing design changes to the subcompact's fuel system was greater than the economic cost of the burn injuries and deaths that could be prevented by doing so. Subsequently some have played down[57] the importance of this case as Pinto explosion fatality estimates range widely from 27 to 900,[56] with the lowest figures being allegedly in line with comparable fatality statistics for other car models. Nevertheless, the affair is an infamous example of a big corporation putting profit before human life because one senior Ford executive, at the time of the memo, is alleged to have written of his Pinto customers: it's "cheaper to let them burn".[58]

In the related Ford Pinto product liability case Grimshaw v. Ford Motor Co., 119 Cal. App. 3d 757 (4th Dist. 1981) the California Court of Appeal for the Fourth Appellate District reviewed Ford's conduct and upheld compensatory damages of $2.5 million and punitive damages of $3.5 million against Ford. Of the two plaintiffs, one was killed in the collision that caused her Pinto to explode, and her passenger, 13-year old Richard Grimshaw, was badly burned and scarred for life.

A similar problem occurred in Australia with faulty plastic tanks shipped from the U.S. (deemed unsafe for use in the U.S.) and installed in the locally produced Ford Falcon, and when hit at the rear the tanks burst into flame, with the same effects as above.
