lol...my dog gets pissed whenever we are on the phone. she starts whinning because we're not paying attention to her. then she starts with that ear pearcing, high pitched, bark of hers. its kind of funny...but extremely annoying too!
how about when you pet other dogs? My dog gets MEGA jealous... she'll come over and squeeze between me and the other dog... 'bitch, get away from my human'

sorry about the abusive thing, i ddint really mean it as an accusation... i realised it might ahve come across as such after i posted it.

sometimes thats like the best part of my day, when you open the door and they're wagging their tail like mad.

Actually, I think they can hold it a little longer. Might depend on breed...

my dog is remarkably good at holding herself...

everyone will have a different opinion. I have two Labs, 8 and 9, I still keep them locked in their own room as my oldest WILL chew things if she has enough energy and is bored (still...at 9 yrs old!). I don't keep them crated, just gated in a room with their crates open, toys around, cheap couch for them to lay on. I have a pet sitter come in three days a week once per day (once at my house, 2x at my ex husband's, one of those visits is by his brother for free). My ex husband takes them the other two days he has off. Yes, I have a good deal. If your dog has lots of energy, I suggest keeping her busy when you're home so she's tired while you're gone. The more exhausted she is, the less likely she'll have the energy to get into things. If at all possible, have someone let her out at lunch time, maybe roam the house the 2nd half of the day only. If they're bored, they'll get into things.
believe it or not, we don't "need" anything. that is only the spoiled brat in us trying to fill some temporary solution to an emptyness that does not exist.

damn, when my oldest was 18months, she'd have torn the house apart if I left her alone that long. Love her dearly but she is still my trouble child.

Wow, I can't believe how many people actually keep their dogs in a crate for several hours a day.

Would you do that to your own children. Dogs have the mentality of a 2 year old child. You wouldn't keep a 2 year old child in a box all day, would you?

There are ways to train dogs to deal with the anxiety of being alone. It takes a lot of effort...I guess it's easier to box them up.

Not even animal shelters keep animals in crates for that long, and those animals often develop mental problems from being crated as much as they are.

If you can't treat your pets humanely, then don't get any.

  • I would suggest doing some research and find a company that will come to your house and let the dog out for a while. I think they are usually bonded and insured. My dog is left alone on and off for most of the work day except Mondays when I take her to day care. It wasn't fair to her to be alone 10+ hours on Mondays, so I said fuck it and pay the 28 bucks for the day.

Whoa, whoa, whoa!!! You live in SF and your dog is named Dodger? WTF?? :D

From a bladder standpoint, we tried to never leave Shelby for more than 9 hours, max. My wife used to say Shelby would explode before she would disappoint us (by peeing in the house). RIP, girl. :(

my gawd that dog is gorgeous! :)
my old doggie sinead was the same way, NEVER an accident in the house, never destructive, etc. she was the BEST dog, by far, i have ever had the pleasure of sharing life with. my dog chloe now is such an obedient dog, just wants to do what you want her to, but she does have a few bad habits. our fault more than hers of course, but whatever. now igby does have accidents. not often, but sometimes. some of them simply b/c he doesn't go while he's outside b/c he's too busy playing...othertimes he simply can't hold it. he's a pug, so i understand it is difficult. most of the time though, he does manage to go accident-free 11 hours a day. if igby can, any dog over 1-1.5 can.

as far as crating, almost all reputable dog trainers WILL tell you crating is a very GOOD idea, an excellent training tool and also offers a dog a sense of security. no, they would not suggest crating a dog for 8-11 hours straight every day, but most especially at the puppy stage whenever they are not being 100% supervised, to crate them. i've used crates in the past with previous dogs, but never too long, and nevr for an entire workday. as whiz mentioned earlier, having a relativily doggie proof room or rooms that you confine them in is the best idea....along with toys for distractions and lots of love and exercise when you are home.
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow

are we still talking about dogs?
I just don't trust anything that bleeds for five days and doesn't die.
  • My dog -- 16-month old lab -- is by himself for at least nine hours a day and many times longer than that as I often have to pull after hours work.
But, he is not capable of being left alone in the house, as he is quite a fuck up still, so he stays in the backyard/garage.....I have a pet door in the back of the garage that allows him to go into the fence area
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all
