Petey is almost 2, he has not seen the inside of his crate since he was 7 months old. But I only work 2 days a week, and my kids are home most days by 2pm. So he isn't home alone very long. So far....he has done nothing but sleep.
I'd have someone come in and let your dog out, and maybe play with him for a bit. When you get home a long walk and a play session are a really good idea, just to get out all the excess energy. A tired dog is a good dog.

Our dog shits on the floor occasionally, but that is more out of spite than anything.

Whoa, whoa, whoa!!! You live in SF and your dog is named Dodger? WTF??
From a bladder standpoint, we tried to never leave Shelby for more than 9 hours, max. My wife used to say Shelby would explode before she would disappoint us (by peeing in the house). RIP, girl. :(

but we've never ever kept her in a crate or kennel... no offense to anyone but i actually find that abusive especially if its a big dog.

huh? its not abusive to crate your dog. and, sorry, i do take offense when someone basically accuses me of abusing my dog. it is actually an effective way to train them. if i never had a chewing problem with my dog, like your situation, then i probably would not have crated her nearly as much as i did. i just didnt want my whole house to be eaten. you may have thought differently if you had those problems with your husky.
that said, as i stated in the original post, i am not crating her anymore though. i am just trying to find out what other people do with their dogs all day while they're at work. thanks for your input though.www.myspace.com0 -

lol...my dog gets pissed whenever we are on the phone. she starts whinning because we're not paying attention to her. then she starts with that ear pearcing, high pitched, bark of hers. its kind of funny...but extremely annoying too!www.myspace.com0 -
I leave my 1 1/2 year old black lab, Gravy at home in the house with the cat for 9 to 11 hours per work day. She has never had a single accident in the house at all. She sure is super excited to see me when i walk in the door and the first thing she wants to do is go outside!0

everyone will have a different opinion. I have two Labs, 8 and 9, I still keep them locked in their own room as my oldest WILL chew things if she has enough energy and is bored (still...at 9 yrs old!). I don't keep them crated, just gated in a room with their crates open, toys around, cheap couch for them to lay on. I have a pet sitter come in three days a week once per day (once at my house, 2x at my ex husband's, one of those visits is by his brother for free). My ex husband takes them the other two days he has off. Yes, I have a good deal. If your dog has lots of energy, I suggest keeping her busy when you're home so she's tired while you're gone. The more exhausted she is, the less likely she'll have the energy to get into things. If at all possible, have someone let her out at lunch time, maybe roam the house the 2nd half of the day only. If they're bored, they'll get into things.believe it or not, we don't "need" anything. that is only the spoiled brat in us trying to fill some temporary solution to an emptyness that does not exist.

damn, when my oldest was 18months, she'd have torn the house apart if I left her alone that long. Love her dearly but she is still my trouble child.believe it or not, we don't "need" anything. that is only the spoiled brat in us trying to fill some temporary solution to an emptyness that does not exist.

Wow, I can't believe how many people actually keep their dogs in a crate for several hours a day.
Would you do that to your own children. Dogs have the mentality of a 2 year old child. You wouldn't keep a 2 year old child in a box all day, would you?
There are ways to train dogs to deal with the anxiety of being alone. It takes a lot of effort...I guess it's easier to box them up.
Not even animal shelters keep animals in crates for that long, and those animals often develop mental problems from being crated as much as they are.
If you can't treat your pets humanely, then don't get any.0 -
