Biking With Your Dog?

does anyone like to do this? i tried it out over the weekend and it went well. i have a german shorthair pointer and she loved getting on the trail and running. it was difficult in the street (just the little street in my development) because of all the distractions. but once we got to the trail it was really fun. great excersize for the pooch. i did almost lose her once when she had a little too much leash and stopped to smell something she tugged me backwards--instead of wiping out, i let the leash go and she kind of took off. but i got her back. and we were cool from there on out. it was really fun.

i was wondering if anyone else does this with their dogs and if you have any advice on how to be more safe. i saw online that you can buy devices specifically for this that attach to your bike. i also saw some people kind of tie the leash right below the seat. i just held it in my right hand the whole way. it was fun but i also felt as if i would fall off at any moment!

any thoughts/ideas?

i've never done it...but i also have a german short-hair pointer (well, a mix)...and i think she would LOVE that! definitely has to be one of those medium-bigger sport breeds to enjoy that i think.

so, sorry...no pointers. just wanted to say kudos to you, getting exercise for you and your dog, sure i'ts fun for you both! and hope you do get some safe pointers!

i think this would be fun, but my dogs would get me hurt. neither are very good on a leash, and both weigh over 100 lbs.

i think it would end badly for me.
    Peace, Love.

My husband takes our dogs mountain biking with him all the time. Sometimes his friends bring their dogs, too - so there's a big pack of them running through the woods. Never on a leash besides the parking lot. That way they get ten times the exercise you can give them...

Just let your dog know you've got treats with you and work on her recall and things should be OK. Riding with a leash is not good unless you're on the road or paved multiuse pathway.

You wouldn't get very far, biking with a dog. It hasn't got wheels.

Hubby also suggests a bungy cord attached to the handle bars and then to the end of the leash (not the retractable kind) will give you a little less of a sharp tug when she stops and use this until she gets used to running mostly beside you. Give her a treat or some extra lovin' when she does well...eventually you won't need a leash...(unless it's required where you live and ride)...

happy to assist in the profound journey of your life. READ those lyrics, VERY life-changing, as are many pj lyrics and thus a big part of my love and adoration for em. also read, and reread hail, hail....it's all good!

btw - you should post a pic of your pointer, such beautiful dogs! my chloe is a beauty, and not even a purebred!

I think this would be physically impossible. If you lived in the country then you could probably pull it off to some extent. I live in the city and it's impossible to walk a dog without encountering someone else in your path.
What I normally do is go for a bike ride, then take my dog for a walk afterwards.

I'm a Mod on a Doberman forum.....lots of people use the Biker Dog attachment to exercise their dogs. http://www.bikerdog.com/

I live in the country, so I just hike with my boy every day. All dogs need some sort of exercise every day to stay sane.

Just a note....no dog should do forced exercise on a asphalt road until after the age of 18 months.

I don't bike with my dogs. I take them hiking though. I have seen people riding on mountain bike trails with their dogs. You just have to make sure they get plenty of water, especially when it warms up. You also have to make sure that you gradually increase their running time so they don't overdue it at first. In summer, make sure they are not constantly running on a hot surface, like asphalt. That can burn up a dog's feet.
