Is it true that wine makes you lose weight?

It's just that I've never really diets; survived on a staple diet of chocolate biscuits and far too many Nando's chicken, chocolate and crisps quite a lot of the time but drink quite a lot of wine. Eventually, some weight started to fall off but I didn't think it that noticeable until people have really started commenting on it. I was telling some friends about my diet 'secrets' and one of them said it's the wine that was making me lose weight!

I thought this was bullshit because alcohol makes you GAIN weight if anything. But I've heard this said by someone else so is this true.

PS - the way I have been going, I've been taking my weight loss a lot more seriously recently!

The only thing wine made me lose was my mind...however, it did seem to make me not care about my weight. Seriously, as one who has lost and kept off over a hundred pounds, eat sensibly and exercise sensibly unless you want quick fixes and a ride on the weight loss merry-go-round. I don't think wine in moderation makes a difference either way...I was just lousy at the "in moderation" part!

take in less calories, or burn off more calories....and you lose weight.
wine does not 'make' you lose weight. however, i do not think wine is as 'bad' for you when watching your weight b/c there is nutritional value in there, so not entirely empty calories...and quite a lot of antioxidants and good stuff for the body. just don't over-indulge too much.

i love red wine, and it is always a part of my 'healthy diet.'

  • well, the time of my life when I drank most, when I lived in Paris, I actually went down 2 dress sizes and was skinny (not nicely so) mainly cos I was drinking so much, I forgot to eat :o but I'd a lot of fun losing all that weight :D but that was on heineken and Guinness.

Coffee and chocolate biscuits were my diet for 3 months and I lost over a stone. The reason being, that apart from alcohol, I was living on 20+ cups of coffee and 4 or 5 biscuits a day. Nothing else.

The only way to lose weight is to eat less calories than you use. Wherever those calories come from.

Funnily enough, my wine intake increased considerably when I was living in France...:D

Wine, being an inanimate object, can't make anyone do anything.

carbs (sugars) - 4 calories per gram
protien - 4 calories per gram
fat - 9 calories per gram
alcohol - 7 calories per gram.

Considering that wine has alcohol in it and it heightens your appetite.....i wouldn't say it makes you lose weight.

Caffiene will curb your appetite though.

My dad is an alcoholic. He has been as long as I've known him. He is getting larger and larger. He now weighs 210. so...no... wine does not make you lose weight

wine actually moves around... you need a powerful microscope but it does.

also... too much wine can make me vomit. ;)

Wine will dehydrate you, so drink a lot at night and weigh yourself in the morning, you will weigh less. Do that everyday without eating anything and you will be skinny as a rail;)
Thank you fellow 10 clubber for saving my ass....again!!!

wine by itself won't help you lose weight; however, it can be a healthy part of a regimen that helps you lose weight.

    no

    it doesn't
    wah
  • Nothing you eat or drink will make you lose or gain weight. If you're eating less calories than you're burning, you lose weight. If you're eating more calories than you're burning, you gain weight.

Certain foods/drinks are more helpful in keeping your calories lower on the same volume of food, but wine isn't one of them. Alcohol is the worst thing for you if you're trying to lose weight. You're better off drinking Kool-Aid than wine with regards to weight loss.

Celery.. eat celery.. it (apparently) takes more calories to digest than it gives... giveing it a negative calorie count. so its red wine & celery for my supper tonight :)
