i know there have been other threads...but time for a new/revived one.
i/we are relatively *new* wine lovers, and always interested in trying new wines. so let's share some faves!
we are red lovers, don't really care for white as all...i blame very bad experiences from my youth for the fact i cannot fall in love with them nowadays...but reds, YUMMY! *will say, have ALWAYS had/have mad love for champange though...so any good suggestions there, share!
at the moment, my absolute fave: coppolla's director's cut - pinot noir....fantastic! only truly sad thing is, cannot find it in a store! it seems quite common for restaurants to carry wines not readily available, mostly so you can't tell you are paying 2-3x as much for the bottle there.
it is soooo annoying tho! we have loads of wine shops around, and not a one carries it. same with hubby's fave: francis coppolla presents rosso shiraz.
i mean hell, they are cali wines...should be able to get em anywhere! can't even get either on wines.com. sheesh. one of our local places is ordering the pinot noir for us, but we had to commit to buying 6 bottles. not bad, we will drink it all
...but as it's not a cheap wine, bit steep to lay out at once. so if any LI/manhattan people know of a shop that carries it, let me know!
on the cheaper end.....really love the yellowtail shiraz...yummy, and did i mention cheap?
for long island wines, overall...not a big fan, but the pindar cab sav is quite good.
i AM awaiting some chilean suggestions....*cough*jose*cough*.....;)...also hear some south african wines are good too!
share some suggestions...tastes....whatever!
*btw - the director's cut bottle....sooo cool! anyone interested in art/cinema...the label is actually based on a vintage zoetrope stip....tis beautiful!

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.0 -

I still love the Oregon Pinots, but it's too bad that the prices are so inflated. I still have a couple 2004 Benton Lanes which I bought for around $17. Now the 2006 is selling for well over $20, and it's not near the quality of the 2004--That was a great year for Oregon Pinots
..
As for Cabs, lately i've been loving wines from Argentina. They are better known for their Malbec, but Luigi Bosca's Cab Reserve is phenomenal and can be found in the $15 range..
My current favorite California Cab is J. Lohr..

i wouldn't hold onto those 2004s too long. i have learned the whole 'aging wine' thing, in reality...not the best idea. most wines are meant to be consumed not long after purchase, even reds. sure, if you get into some truly fine/expensive vintages...perhaps...but wines in the 15-50 range, errr....not so much.
thanks for the argentinian tips. while cabs are my least fave of the 3 mentioned....merlot is my absolute least fave...we do enjoy a good cab now and again. i assume all are pretty readily avaialable in local wine shops? that seems to be the issue with so many that we love...can never find em.Stay with me...

I love shiraz as a general rule but South African and Australian seem to go down nicely
I would just like to say that white wine is the work of the devil.Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

i doubt you will be able to find it in stores if it had to be special ordered.....certain vintages will be sold only in cases (bulk) sometimes due to their limited availability.....:)
as for my preference, i love any red wine from everyday 2 buck chuck to a nice grgich hills....:)0 -
Wolf Blass yellow label shiraz 2004 :cool:Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

I can't drink merlot.... gives me migraines :(Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

Charles Shaw Cab....the abosolute best buy on the wine market.
The Cab and the Shiraz has won a few "Double Gold Medals", one of the highest honors for wine. The Chard won the prize for best Cali wine too! All scored int he 95-98 point range.
...and for $2-3 a bottle, simply amazing.0 -
Frey Vineyards makes awesome organic wine. <--No added sulfites. This is what will give some a headache. It is a CA vineyard I believe.
Coppolla is readily available where I am. My guy down the street carries it.Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away0 -
coppolla is available EVERYwhere near me....particularly coppolla diamond collection. the director's cut line is not. even the coppolla presents rosso line....they carry the classic blend...but not the shiraz...it's quite annoying. as i mentioned. it's the director's cut pinot noir that i want readily available, but as cutback mentions and we already suspected, the director's cut line is more than likely a more limited vintage, thus limited availabilty...figures.
keep all the suggestions coming!
and sennin...cheap AND awesome?! definitely will look for it!Stay with me...

I drink all kinds of wine except the sweet stuff like Riesling or *horrors* White Zinfindel.
Casa Lapostolle Cabernet is a nice wine from Chile (or Spain?).
Seghesio makes a fine Zinfindel
A to Z Pinot Noir is yummy
Rutherford Hill Merlot is one of my fav Merlot and I am not a big Merlot fan.
Favorite Cabs: Hall, Jordan, Silver Oak ($$$), Clos Du Val, Hanna, Cakebread, Napa Cellars
Have you tried experimenting with white wine? I love New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, they are very light and crisp but not as dry as a Pinot Grigio. I do love a "big" Chardonnay such as Rombauer, Patz & Hall and Ramey.
I recently began trying French white burgandy and wine from the Macon-Village region. I find that most of the Macon-Village wine is similar to a Sauvignon Blanc or at least a mix of SB and Chardonnay.
I could go on and on about wine!"you shall be released" ~ EV0 -

i'e yet to meet a red wine i didnt like... i watched James May and that ponce Oz Clarke going around Cailfornia tasting wines and stuff.. it hurt my pancreas to watch them swill the wine around in their mouth and then spit it out?!?!?!
why do that?
Hardy's voyage Cab Sauv for me tonight
i love Aussie wines the mostestoh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.0 -
