  • It's rememberance day here too.

We had a 2 minute silence at work this morning to remember those who fought and are still fighting.

Thank you to all the soldiers who've given all they had, their lives, energy, time or precious moments missed to fight for people like me.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Yes, everyone should take a moment out of their day to pay homage to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we continue to live as we do.

And God bless all those who are still doing so today.

And thank you God for bringing my loved one back safely from Iraq.

    thanks vets...we're nothing w/out you.
I love to turn you on
  • I sometimes get on here touting the heroics of Albert Pujols, Kobe Bryant, Sidney Crosby, Usain Bolt and the like and there is no doubt these people are great athletes. But today I spoke to my hero. I called my grandfather and thanked him for his life of service. You see my grandfather grew up in south Arkansas and when old enough enrolled in the Navy. Not too long after, he was on a Navy ship fighting the Japanese near Okinawa in World War II.

He doesn't like to speak much about it and my entire life he has downplayed his role, but today I got him to open up a little and he admitted that it gives him pride to know that he played a part in keeping us all from speaking Japanese.

Thanks Pa, and thanks to all our service men and women who are in all parts of this world representing the United States of America.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
    We will remember them.

  • In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields

A thank you to those that fought to defend the lives of the innocent. I hope for peace.

I remember going to Tyne Cot in Ypres when I was 16 and our history tutor read this to us. We could see poppies, literally row upon row into the distance... The silence afterward was deafening.

It was written by a Canadian.

That will be a moment to remember all of your life. Beautiful in an eerie way. Not to sound morbid but I would like to do a tour to pay my respect to the fallen Canadians. To all those that lost their lives simply for their religious beliefs and so many others that were deemed weak or dirty. I simply can't even wrap my mind around the toll of war. Hard to believe the ignorance and hatred of others.

    Armistice Day 90 years on

Mr Patch, the last known survivor of the Battle of Passchendaele in Ypres, said before the ceremony: "I am very happy to be here today. It is not just an honour for me but for an entire generation.

"It is important to remember the dead from both sides of the conflict. Irrespective of the uniforms we wore, we were all victims."

So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

Thank you, Chime. Mr Patch sounds like a very wise man. I agree regardless of the uniform war just sucks. Everyone suffered.

Yeah, we were told John McCrae was Canadian. :)

When I went to Ypres (Passchendaele), we visited Tyne Cot, Menin Gate and a secret airbase (I can't remember the name). We also walked around the WW1 trenches... it was amazing and very emotional. To think that boys as young as ourselves had died such horrific deaths, right where we were standing, was overwhelming.

That 'holiday' will stay with me for the rest of my life. I recommend anyone to pay their respects and follow the final paths of those who so bravely fought for us.

I just like to remind others of Canada's contributions as we are a rather modest nation about our past.

That would be very overwhelming. I agree with you though everyone should pay their respects.

I think you should. You should be proud of your nation :)
