I went riding a couple of days ago for the first time in ages. I loved it and I wish I could go more but due to moving house I had to give my Dad my bike as i've nowhere to store it. Trouble is, only going every now and again leaves me a bit deflated as I love being out in the fresh air and offroad so much... but then again, only riding every so often allows me to hijack and ride my Dad's lovely Cannondale ;)

I'm going on holiday in July to Devon and I want to take my bike, only thing is, if I do take it, no one will see me for days :o
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

I gotta try this sometime. It's weird, I cycle absolutely everywhere. It's my main mode of transport, but I never thought of it as a pasttime. Never even bought myself a decent bike. I just move from one piece of crap to another.

It is the real escape. There is nothing like losing yourself with your bike and a few friends and a bit of green.

I know what ur thinking when you see that photo of me on my bike. You're thinking that the seat is too low -that I'm almost in a crouching position.

My lower back is supremely fucked up from a disc herniation, and I have to keep it as upright as possible. If the seat were at an optimal height for leg extension, I'd be leaning too far forward for comfort. But, thanks for noticing.

I was going to say something but I guess that makes sense. ;) I'm sure its easier on your back, but it's got to make pedaling around a lot harder huh?

I don't even notice it anymore.

Once i was riding past three other mtb'rs and one of them went, "Heh, heh, I got my seat dropped right now for some downhilling, heh, heh." His friends went, "heh, heh."

None of their seats were fixed at a low position, so I guess they were making fun of me.

Shitting hell!! Bits of that track look scary as fook, like that really narrow wooden track bit that turns into an even smaller log like thing to cross over
I keep thinking i would like to try some proper trails instead of just riding through the little bit of forest in my local park, but after checking that site out i reckon i would be too scared now!

I have an old Diamond Back Vectra SE and every year i spend about £50 buying new parts for it as i have a phase of loving going out on it, but then it gets stuck back in the garage for ten months and becomes a novelty shaped spiders web!

Im thinking of getting a new one but have zero knowledge of what to get/how much i should spend etc... all i can go off is the weight and the colour to decide if i like em  Can anyone recommend some good mid range bikes for me to look at?

What sort of trail is it? How many miles?

I haven't figured out my exact route just yet so I'm not quite sure on miles...it will start on a bike path that is paved (White Pine Trail) and then turns to dirt. I will hook up to sections of the North Country Trail (sections where bikes are permitted) and then make my way NE on parts of two-laned roads.

Wow.... Seattle -> Michigan. My attention span is too short for that. I bet you were in awesome shape though. Did you have support or were you self-supported?

I know what you mean by attention span, but after two days my mind settled in and it was great! No support -- just what I could carry on the bike. Credit card bailed me out only three nights when I absolutely needed a hotel room -- the rest was camping. 28 days total, and yeah, awesome shape. I had an appetite like a trash compactor yet no body fat to show for my indulgences.

Hubby is a HUGE mountain biker...he used to ride the North Shore in Vancouver at night back in the day...Just got himself a new bike from Quebec (downhill bike) and sometimes still used his hardtail Rocky Mountain for x-country and single track...He also has a single speed that his friends at Spot Bikes made for him...

He raced a couple of times about 15 years ago or so...wasn't really his thing. Just likes to have fun fun fun! Went to a place called Sun Peaks, BC last weekend where he had a blast with a few of his friends at the new mountain bike park there...His dream is to ride MOAB before he gets old...alas, he is one of these "40-somethings" now so he hopes to do it soon. Actually, he's been mountain biking since 1988, when mountaining biking was almost unknown and buying an actual mountain bike was rather difficult...

I did a little bit of riding myself, but was sooooo uncooridinated. It was a shame, because I used to ride my 10-speed through the woods and "off road" when I was a teenager. Just wasn't able to do the same on a mountain bike. I currently have a Rocky Mountain Hammer, but I've ridden it maybe three times in ten years...

I like to get out an mountain bike whenever I can. Its nice going to a ski resort that converts to a mountain bike part in the summer cause you don't have to ride up the hill.
Take time to see the sky,
    Find shapes in the clouds.
Hear the murmur of the wind
    and touch the cool water.
    Walk softly,
    we are intruders,
    tolerated briefly
    In an infinite universe.

I love mountain biking! I've been riding a single speed for the past 4-5 years.
