did Daniel Day-Lewis not win the oscar for best actor in 1993 for In the Name of the Father? He turned down Philadelphia fer chrissakes :D no way was Hanks better.

Just watched it now. Cracking film, amazing performance. Good call Helen ;)

yeah.. totally amazing actor!! he's weirder than a pengiun made out of toast... but one top actor and a half :)
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

Damn well must have been. At least this year he should be recompensed for that mistake.

    It's the only explanation.

Glad you 'enjoyed' it Jeremy... ya can't go wrong recommending that film to anyone. And I stand by his performance being the best that I have ever seen IMO. Unfuckingbelievable... especially when he loses it :(

I was actually gonna watch this Saturday night myself but didn't for some reason.

I can understand in the name of the father... cos it was obviously all political... ok, I still don't understand why it HAS to be political at all... it should be the best performance wins and I don't hear ANYONE say Hanks was better and wouldn't believe them if they did anyway. 7 nominations and 0 wins?

The thing that blows my mind is how BELIEVABLE he is, in all his characters but particular Gerry Conlon. I swear, his acting in the final court scene, without saying a word and just using his facial expressions is some of the most amazing acting I have ever scene. The amount of hair standing on neck moments in that film was incredible. I don't care how much artistic license was used, it was fucking brilliant.

That is absolutely true... as amazing a film as it was, I think it would be simply great with another actor... but he was absolutely fantastic. I don't usually like Emma Thompson all that much either but she was great in it too. It was pretty obvious the actors felt a lot for the story.

  • day lewis is the best actor of his generation

In the name of the father is an excellent film.

but they would never give an oscar to a gyu who played a 'terrorist', even back then.

seriously though... considering the storyline and the outcome at the end, to say he played a terrorist, with or without the brackets, should REALLY not have anything to do with the outcome when ya think of it and should actually have the opposite effect but I guess some of the acadamy just read the back of the box rather than actually watching the film... it's the only excuse :( .

  • no it shouldnt but it did.

And the ending makes it even worse, because its acknowledgment that the British government got it wrong and ruined lives.

cant wait to watch 'there will be blood' this weekend.

He is an amazing actor. In The Name of The Father is an incredable film. He's a bit of a recluse and a private person and why not?Wanting to keep yourself out of the cult of todays celebrity doesn't make someone mad.

Emma Thompson was absolutely incredible in that final court scene :) I do normally like her anyway but I think that was her best role.
