Going to Salerno Italy in Jan

I'm headed to Salerno Italy in Jan. for two weeks; I've been to Italy a bunch of times over the years, but only passed through the Naples area. I'm a photography dork and would love to find me a couple of towns with character off the beaten path. Does any one have any experience with the area? I know it gets a little hairy with the crime and trash in some towns, but I'm not too worried about it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
