Cell phone usage in Central America

All,

Novice traveler here. Going to be traveling to Guatemala soon and was wondering about cell phone service. Anyone ever use TIGO cell phones or the disposable international types? Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Spent two weeks in Costa Rica in January...local monopoly....none of the phones with U.S. service worked at all.
