because dolan's the schmuck who gave him a contract extension that has 18 million remaining and he has enough buyouts.

why is Isiah still in the organization?

He's an adviser to a guy that doesn't need advice. He's Dolan's little buddy, so he stays on the payroll. I'd be surprised if he had any impact on any future decisions.

I have to say I like Mike D'Antoni. Not to say that I'd have objected to Mark Jackson. Hell, the Knicks were so bad under Isiah Thomas, I'd have settled for anyone even a guy named Joe Thomas.

are the knicks going to have the same offense-oriented style as d'antoni did with the suns?

i wouldn't think so with eddy curry on the team, considering it's a struggle for curry to get up the court in that amount of time. that being said, it's always possible the roster could look different by the time training camp starts in october.

  • so how is this gonna work? the knicks are gonna be a running team now? how many running teams have won NBA championships? dallas? phoenix? the '99 knicks? any of them?

no, because there is no professional team sport in which you can voluntarily lose the time of possession battle and still expect to have success in the postseason.

postseason success in the NBA is about wearing the other team down and taking advantage of it in the fourth quarter. you accomplish this by playing solid defense and having good offensive possessions.

i realize that this assessment isn't fair to d'antoni. he says he can adjust to the situation and obviously he deserves a chance at this point. and i still like him better than mark jackson (maybe now he'll have some free time to go on dancing with the stars... something tells me he'd be good at that ;)).

it just pisses me off how much this organization constantly misjudges its fanbase. everyone says this team is gonna be more "entertaining" with their new running style. but what exactly is their definition of this term? knicks fans are entertained by winning basketball. it's really quite simple. if a team could be entertaining without playing defense, i probably would have watched more than a dozen knicks games this year. but maybe that's just me...

I'm willing to take a wait-and-see approach with this, because I like D'Antoni and honestly anyone not named Isiah Thomas is an upgrade in coaching. And plus, the roster could be different when training camp starts.

Remember when Quentin Richardson had a career year in Phoenix? That run and gun style that allowed him to hit like a million 3's? He could set up and Nash would find him on the perimeter. As long as they have a point guard capable to run it, i do think you'll see the Knicks score a lot of points.

Maybe they won't be the Clippers of the Eastern Conference for as long as we thought....

i can't argue with this. i just hope he stresses defense a little bit. that was the biggest (of many) problems i had with isiah.

the roster is another issue entirely... it's a shame they gave up two lottery picks for a guy who they're now desperate to get rid of. but i suppose they knew what they were doing...

Not to make excuses for the guy, but curry did have his house robbed the previous summer and injured his shoulder early in training camp. i suppose it could be possible that it affected his play. either that or the opposing teams watched enough videotape from 2006-07 and figured out better ways to limit him.

i guess it's possible. he certainly has the potential to dominate if he really wants to (maybe d'antoni can reach him somehow).

do you think it would it make sense for the knicks to hold on to him for another year to find out? it seems like it would be difficult to trade him. it would mean taking on more bad contracts.

when you've lost 59 games twice in three seasons, anyone on the roster should be a candidate to be traded.

not at the expense of the salary cap, though.

2010 is when they'll be under it (i think). if they continue to take on longer contracts, they'll just be making the same mistake that they've made over and over dating back to the patrick ewing trade.

of course not, i just meant that anyone should be offered on the trade market and if the right deal comes, it comes. however, i'd be curious to see how most of the current group perform under a normal set of circumstances with competent people like donnie walsh and mike d'antoni running things.
