I understand that it is sort of an impulse item, but why are 20oz bottles of soda usually more expensive then a 2 litre bottle!

    I don't think it what's the soda manufacturers intended, but it does help cover the social cost of increased waste and inefficiency.

    It's cold and you can hold it and drink from it easily.

    A two-liter bottle is usually neither in the store.

    In retail, they call it an impulse buy. The customer typically doesn't consider the cost so much as the satisfaction of buying the item. You are not the typcal customer, apparently. ;)
