Thinking about purchasing this for mine and the fam's taxes. Is it as easy as advertised? How effective is it for taxes?

When I had a salaried position I used it and it worked quite well and was very user friendly. However, now that I am commission based I need my accountant like a drunk needs a drink. He needs to protect my ass with write offs, expenses, etc. that I couldn't, nor wouldn't want to leave in the hands of me and my computer.

  • im an idiot and i can use it.

it does most of the work for you, just pay attention and read every direction it gives you.
Jam out with your clam out.
  • most of those tax programs are easy...step by step. Like Mookie said, it you have a basic salary, and don't do commission stuff, or don't itemize your deductions....these programs are most definitely for you. For the past five or six years I've used the H&R Block program.

Very well-put. Turbotax is good if your taxes are simple, but if you are in a situation where you have expenses, a CPA can advise you regarding "grey areas". Turbotax wil advise re: expenses, but a good CPA will know what addtl expenses you may take, based on your specific profession.

For example, I always have my entertainment clients deduct movies, magazines, cds & concert tickets as "research" expenses.

It is similar to using a good lawyer...anyone can read the laws, but a good lawyer can help you stretch the laws either way in your favor.

Exactly! Just to show how important my accountant is to me is, he is located about 60 miles outside of Manhattan on Long Island. Yet I make the trip every year even though there's probably 25,000 accountants here in the city. Once you find a good one, you stay married to them!!!

Sure. If you don't mind heading out to Long Island shoot me a pm and I'll send you his details. Oh, and if he's booked his wife and daughter do just as good of job.
