I'm very sad at the loss of avalon.

Not me - maybe worst place to see a mid-size show in the city IMO. Highly prefer the acoustics of the Orpheum or Opera House even the Somerville theatre- heck while smaller - like the Paradise much better as a GA set up or even Lupo's in RI. Always thought Avalon was made for club nights that hosted music every now and again......good ridance same with Axis - can't wait for the new place.

    SHOW COUNT: (159) 1990's=3, 2000's=53, 2010/20's=103, US=118, CAN=15, Europe=20 ,New Zealand=2, Australia=2
    Mexico=1, Colombia=1

    Upcoming:   Aucklandx2, Gold Coast, Melbournex2

My thoughts exactly. Can't wait either.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me.

but avalon was the only place in the city for shows that size (the closest thing is the roxy, and please, that's worse).

think about it, some of the bands I've seen there in the past 5-10 years or so include: bad religion, audioslave, velvet revolver, pete yorn, BRMC...I'm balnking now, but my point is where else would bands this size play? the orpheum has good accoustics, but it does not attract the same types of bands as avalon did. the paradise is much smaller and in the past 10 years seems attract generally bad bands. and the somerville theater? that's a terrible place for shows. very uncomfortable.

in fact, when they first announced they were getting rid of avalon/axis, the globe (I think) was saying that many bands will just skip boston all together.
  • Good...I'd be happy if a Chuck E Cheese replaced the Axis/Avalon. House of Blues is even better.

Roxy is not that good either - once again a club place that they fit music into. Black Crowes at Somerville in March can't wait. I also saw Bruce Springsteen at somerville a few years ago and that was one of the best shows I have ever seen outside of PJ - it has its charm.

I went to one show at the somerville theater...what was it...oh the tragically hip. (it was a bad show anyway) but it was sooooo uncomfortable. it was like 800 degrees in there and everyone was on top of each other. I like the open GA style better than the theater setting anyway.

I'm not saying the roxy is good, I'm just saying it's closest in size to what the city needs to replace avalon. tour promoters are very specific when it comes to what size venues artists will play, and without avalon, boston is going to lose out on a lot of the market. people will start playing the worcester palladium...

Sad to see Avalon go, saw many a good show there over the years...as for the argument that the city won't have a venue that size any more...well it will have the new House of Blues. ;)
    This weekend we rock Portland

Henry Rollins is smart, engaging, and a joy to watch. However, Henry Rollins as a comic or making an attempt at adding comedy into his spoken word engagements leaves me describing his "material" as banal and predictable. The statement that George Carlin is not funny is obviously subjective to each of our own senses of humor. With that being said, the amount of successful comedians that list him as their main influence is hard to overlook. 50 million Elvis fans can't be wrong.

I've been to the HOB in Atlantic City

Decent place, it's almost just a big open bar really with a stage

The ONLY thing better than a glass of beer is tea with Miss McGill

That is EXACTLY how I'd describe Carlin haha :P

    It is certainly all subjective.
