digital photo recovery software?

I just recently went to a Wilco concert and took a bunch of photos with my canon digital camera. When I was importing them into my Picasa software, something went terribly awry and the photos were never imported, then they were all deleted from my memory card. I looked everywhere in the computer I could to try and find them, but had no such luck.
I have done some research and found that I could install some kind of photo recovery software that will restore the photos. Has anyone on here ever done this before? Any help at all would be appreciated!
