Washington DC off-the-beaten-path?

My family and I are planning a long weekend in Washington DC this weekend. In addition to all of the touristy staples (washington monument, arlington cemetery, etc) I was hoping to go to a couple of places that were lesser-known but very cool. Anyone have any suggestions? Are there any touristy places I should avoid? Any advice would be greatly appreciated...
I smile, but who am I kidding...

Two weeks ago we had an exhibit to showed a projection system that lit up the east side of the National Cathedral along with concerts before hand.

They're also boat rides on the Potomac which is always beautiful. Enjoy the city there's lots to see.
