Washington DC off-the-beaten-path?

My family and I are planning a long weekend in Washington DC this weekend. In addition to all of the touristy staples (washington monument, arlington cemetery, etc) I was hoping to go to a couple of places that were lesser-known but very cool. Anyone have any suggestions? Are there any touristy places I should avoid? Any advice would be greatly appreciated...
I smile, but who am I kidding...

It's all good. The best things the the tourist things. Plus they are all free. Don't get too far off the beaten path or you will be robbed or killed. Parts of our nation's capital are fuckin scary!! Plan to do a lot of walking

Remember, you can walk anywhere, as long as you have the time.

I'm at work and I'll get back to you on where to go but all that you will do stay away from Southeast, DC. I got there once and it'll NEVER happen again.

Here are a few sites, it all depends on what your want to see and do together. my daughter and i usually ride our bikes from site to site but for her the Air and Space museum is a must. The national Zoo is revamped and a Panda visit is always good. Most of these sites are free.

Two weeks ago we had an exhibit to showed a projection system that lit up the east side of the National Cathedral along with concerts before hand.

They're also boat rides on the Potomac which is always beautiful. Enjoy the city there's lots to see.
