Coffee or tea

I wrote a bunch of poems over 10 years ago when I went on a culinary journey. I visited 200 Seattle cafes within a year and wrote a poem at each cafe.

I like the idea of traveling for food, but I don't want to put pressure on myself to write a poem. I'm thinking I'll visit cafes/tea houses and rate the coffee /tea.

If you were to rate coffee or tea what would be the categories. I'll use a 1-5 star rating:

Latte:
Thickness of foam
presentation
taste
smell
Cafe appeal

Tea
clarity i.e., is it a cloudy tea or a clear liquid
taste
Tea house appeal

What other subjects do you use to judge coffee/tea?

Ms Haiku, I think presentation and environment should be in the whole rating process as well because the way something tastes isn't the whole experience. The way it looks, the way you feel in the place you're drinking, the mood of the person serving it, etc., can make the time superior or unpleasant.

I was a little conflicted about this point when I originally wrote the first post. Straight coffee doesn't do it for me. I need a little . . . luxury. I'll probably go the cup of coffee with milk. I just LOVE the foam, though. Hmm, definitely a distinction to be made before I start the journey. A cup of coffee is less expensive then a latte, so that will probably be the deciding factor.

I'm drinking much less coffee compared to before the summer. I may just go on a green tea exploration. I don't want to restrict myself too much in these beginning stages, though.

I'm just teasing you. I had never had a cup of coffee up until about 3 years ago when a girl I was dating found out and made me... she started me on lattes though. I still like a good latte now and again. But there's something about real coffee. I don't even add sugar anymore, just milk or cream. Sometimes vanilla if the place has it.

Anyway, I don't know what coffee fiends would use to review and describe the taste. Personally, I don't like bitter coffee. So it can't be bitter or burnt. I tend to like darker, richer coffees. Creamy if possible. That's about all I've got.

Coffee is for hangovers, and tea is piss.

I will travel for beer. :D

I started drinking tea a couple of years ago, and recently I got more interested in it, tasting various teas. I've learned a little about tea and there are a lot of important aspects. Length of infusion is crucial, I think. If you leave (black) teas to infuse longer, the taste will change, the longer you let it infuse the more bitter it becomes. You can also look at the tea leaves, if they're all approximately the same size and colour, good tea leaves will open up.

If you're travelling and you're in Burlington, Vermont definitely visit Dobrá Tea. They can advise you, help you choose a tea, you know, they're experts on tea. edit: There's also a Dobrá Tea in Madison, Wisconsin.

I like both, but I drink more coffee.

My coffee has to be tall, stong and black.

I like both equally. I prefer greentea and I like my coffee on the strongside and almost black.

Regular coffee in the morning (LOTS of it!)

Earl Grey tea around 11am and 3pm

A latte as a treat/pick-me-up every now and then
  • My coffee maker broke last year and I never replaced it. Instead I busted out the espresso machine. So now I have 3 or 4 double shots a day. :)
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

I beg to differ. It IS coffee... just a bit more refined ;)

    Italian----English
    Latte
    Milk

Quite simply, coffee with milk... and I LOVE IT!
  • Coffee ~ every morning, fresh ground, 2~3 cups. Strong and black

Tea ~ late afternoon, not every day, always with ginger
  • I have tea if I feel like making scones

I love my coffee in the mornings. Lately, I've been on a kick of Folger's Colombian blend, although I'll drink most any kind. The only time when I don't care for coffee is when it's mixed with chickory as an additive. That makes it too bitter and taste bad.

I can't stand hot tea though. Staying true to my Southern heritage, the only way I'll drink tea is if it's iced and has a ton of sugar in it.

Depends. Tea unless I can get decent coffee. I can also drink gallons of tea a day whereas coffee gives me caffeine come downs.

To be honest, I'd rather just have beer.

I'm at the point where I cannot fathom a world without Dunkin Donuts coffee. I swear they sprinkle cocaine in that shit.
  • It's been tea as of late.... it's easier to make one cup, and it doesn't give me the jitters. If I really need to be awake though I'll go for coffee....lots and lots of coffee.:p
