Sonic or Mario?

It's the ultimate question - the 80s/early 90s version of Beatles or Stones?

Which was better, the Plumber or the Hedgehog? I'm a Mario man myself. I grew up with a snes, but my cousin had a mega-drive (genesis for the yanks) so I got to play both a lot. I think the whole Mario series was just far better though. More challenges, cooler enemies, mushrooms, racoon suits -The whole shebang! And it goes without saying that Mario Kart is the greatest game in the history of the universe.

Discuss.

    Mario!

I remember finishing Super Mario Land on my very first Gameboy. And then again with extra creatures! After that, you could start at any level you wanted. Great stuff.

    Mario Kart rocks :D

  • Mario, hands down. Nintendo systems were always better than Sega systems. Gameplay beat them hands down. Also, Mario is one of the most genius franchises ever created. Sonic didn't/doesn't have nearly as much 'stretch potential'. I believe Sonic stopped being interesting after Tails was created, which is, well, pretty soon really...

both were fun, but Mario had staying power....the Mario games kept reinventing themselves with newer challenges, while it seemed that each new Sonic was just a redoing of the old one with a higher number on the end

I disagree. The Sega Genesis was a better system than the SNES, IMO, mostly in the sports genre. The master system and NES weren't different enough to consider. Mario was better than Sonic, however, as most of the Mario games were pretty fun.
Sonic 1 was good and I didn't care after that.

I'm a Mario guy, but I would be lying if I didn't say that I really wanted a Genesis just to play Sonic.

The truth is, I really want a Wii. Zelda looks so good.

    I got that too :D

I'd also like to throw in that New Super Mario Brothers on the DS is a great game, and Mario Kart DS is the best in the series :)

    Zelda IS so good.

To answer the question, I grew up on the NES and SNES, so Mario. But I also had a liking for Sega, which led me to get the Saturn and the Dreamcast, both of which failed. Although the latter was ahead of its time and was an awesome lil system that didn't deserve the fate that it had.

Mario games are way better. But I like Sonic also.

Sonic games also have gotten really lame in the last 6 or 7 years while I've never been disappointed with a Mario release (excluding Mario Party 5+).

Ah, well maybe the fact that I don't care much for sports or sports games counts for my opinion :D

Everyone is allowed to have an opinion :P
Mostly sports, Genesis had a lot of other games going for it besides that.

My vote goes to Sonic! The ones they put out today suck, but back in the Genesis day, I played the Sonic games for hours upon hours. I liked mario, but never had a Nintendo or Gameboy.............I got bored with it over at friend's houses.

I like the early Sonics, but once they got into 3D?? Mario hands down wipes the floor with Sonic as some sort of blue spikey mop.

Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine?? AMAZING I SAY!!!

    Can't wait for Mario Galaxy

YOSHI! I love love love Yoshi. I almost married one of those addicted to games boys. I was waiting at the movie theaters while he played Mortal Kombat. To this day that game makes me sick.

I vote for Tetris and Ms Pac Man. And then Mario, those were the only ones I liked.
