Why do they allow football games to end in a tie?

i am not a huge football fan, but this doesn't make sense to me. the fact that it hardly happens shows, that it's ridiculous that it's even an option.

ok, so a team doesn't score in the 1st ot. why not go to double ot???

within that time, a team has to get the ball within 30 yards and just kick a field goal for the win?

simple as pie.

That would throw things out of whack and with many other offensive and defensive stats.

Why do they let an entire professional sport be ruled by the tv networks? Play the game you Jackasses!!!

my old high school coach used to say that ending a game in a tie is like kissing your sister.

all true competitors would rather lose than end in a tie.

Your coach is an over-competitive asshole. It's about playing the game. Sure it's always good to win, but if that's all you ever care about then you're severely lacking in personality.

I know, but it just sucks balls that the game has to wait for the tv.

Has been that way for 50 years now.....since the Colts-Giants Championship game was a rating smash.

I disagree. If you're going out there and your only goal isn't to win the game, why even play? It's like the Little League (children's baseball) parents complaining about keeping score for the young kids games. Sure, the kids are supposed to have fun but winning is a big part of everything in life.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

those are big words about someone you've never met.

you play the game to have fun. sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but hey that's part of the game. is it still fun after you've lost for the 20th straight time? no frustration on your part cause, "it's all fun." sure you could argue that the real competitor would just be more fired up for the next game, but get real guy. you play to win. simple as that. it's always fun, but if you don't care whether you win or lose, get the hell off my team.

and by the way, my coach has sent more men to play football for Ivy League schools and get a great education than any other coach in Miami-Dade County. and none of them would have been there without his guidance or assistance. he's a great man, not someone that you should think about calling an "asshole."

I have to say that going to an IVY league school is not a big athletic accomplishment.. since IVY's don't give out athletic scholarships...

no you're right, they don't. but these are guys whose grades were borderline (by IVY League standards) but they were good at football. just all-around student athletes. and my coach works his tail off to help these guys.

but it's still an athletic accomplishment.

I think the point was that the guy is turning out decent human beings who are going on to do great things, especially for an over-competitive asshole.

They do give out lots of "grants" for exceptional athletes in sports outside of football, baseball, and basketball though. ;)

The Ivy League would have come in 18th for total medals won at the past Olympics if they were considered a country.

well it only does that in cup finals and stuff... most football (soccer) games just last the 90 minutes. :)
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

Perhaps. I shouldn't have put it the way I did, but I don't like the attitude that there is no point in playing if you don't win everything. I play sports for the love of the game. Obviously no-one likes to lose, but there is more to it imo.
