NBA playoffs are too long

Now, I love the NBA and watching my Lakers, but seriously, over half the teams make it to the playoffs. Is this really necessary? The regular season is 82 games long, we know who the goods teams are and who the not-so-good teams are. The NBA playoffs should be structured as to mimic the NFL. Six teams per conference and the top two seeds get a first round bye. First round is 5 games and they play every other day, none of this 2-3 days in between each game crap. Its April now, they playoffs will go until the middle of June, thats two months!!

The whole inspiration for this thread: I just read that the '85-'86 Chicago Bulls (with MJ) had a 30-52 regular season record, thats not a typo, that's a .366 winning percentage and the NBA deems them good enough for the playoffs. What a waste of time for Bird's 67-15 Celtics.

My message to the NBA: please trim the playoff fat!!

I don't really have a problem with 8 teams per conference making the playoffs. I've never been in favor of letting teams have a bye in the playoffs, plus 8 teams per conference makes it easy to set the playoff tree.

I don't much care for all the time that is spent between games and between series. It just drags on and drags on....making even the most casual of fans, like myself, lose interest early on in the first or second round.

Until people quit going to the games and watching them, they'll continue to drag them out like this. It's all about money. That's why the first round was extended from 5 to 7 games. They're squeezing a minimum of 8 more games out of the first round by making every team need one more win to kill the series and people continue to go.

Plus using the NFL structure wouldn't work in the NBA. A first round bye would be way too much time off for a team. Either make it a 3 day 3 game series and give them a first round bye, or cut it to 4 teams per conference like baseball. But they'd lose a lot of money from what they're making now if they cut it down.

so you want the NBA to also have a 16-game regular season?
the NBA is not NFL to have a knockout playoff games. the reason for that is because of the physical nature of the NFL.

I'm OK with the NBA playoffs. Forty games in 40 nights is pretty cool. The only problem I have with this year's playoffs is that the Bulls imploded. As for the NFL idea, if you cut two teams out of the West, that means a pair of 50-win teams (Denver and Dallas) join a 48-win Golden State club in the lottery. The balance of power constantly shifts in the NBA, meaning that, while the East was the power conference in the 1990s the West has taken over this decade. Ideally the weak teams from the weaker conference get an opportunity to build through the draft and tip the balance. Plus, it seems silly to take the 82-game regular season and devalue the work teams put into getting a playoff bid. Sure, Atlanta's 37-45 record looks pretty bad, but somebody has to play the Celtics. As for that 1985 Bulls team, without Chicago in the playoffs Larry Bird never would have come up with one of the greatest quotes in NBA history: "I think it's just God disguised as Michael Jordan." Jordan's performance, and Bird's subsequent amazement, helped usher in a new era in the NBA. I have a hard time believing the NBA would have been as good without the Bulls seeing first-hand what a true championship-calibre team was all about in the playoffs.

be thankful....the NFL postseason goes by too fast

I agree that it sucks to see crappy teams with losing records make the 8th seed (especially when a team in the West with a better record might get left out). that Bulls team you mention is a good example (though you didn't note that that was MJ's second year where he missed 64 games with an ankle injury)

and you shouldn't call it a "waste of time" for Bird's Celtics. they did let MJ drop a playoff record 63 points on them in a game....so it was worthwhile

  • it does make the regular season almost completely pointless. its like an extended preseason.

It's the NBA season that's too long. Those games are pointless. They should make the season one long playoff and just let everyone in. At least the games would be more exciting.
