How should have I responded to this?

To set the context Pedro Martinez is my favorite baseball player of all time, Michael Vick, was my favorite NFL player, and I'm a pretty big fan of TO as well. Essentially you have to go about 7 names down the list of my current fave athletes till you hit a "white" one (Dirk Nowitzki/Steve Nash). Anyway I was at my in-laws south of Boston this weekend, and the topic of Pedro Martinez and his cockfight escapade in the D.R. came up.

My mother-in-law knows this and says "you know you should really pick a white athlete as your favorite then you wouldn't get into this". So without missing a beat I said "yeah like Roger Clemens or Tom Brady they never did drugs or left their ladies in the lurch". Needless to say it started a bit of an argument...but what the hell should I have done without saying "stop being a racist?"

    How can you live in Baltimore and not have love for Cal Ripken. Your mother-in- law is half right. You're a fan of some pretty big jerks.
    Once in a while you can get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

    you gave a good response, it's not like black/hispanics have the market cornered on illegal activities! i would have been tempted to ask her where she buys her white hoods from but yeah....you had a better response haha

    I HATED super Cal (I grew up in NY and have a non-fave uncle that loved him), but have grown some appreciation for him especially now that I know his wife cheated on him with Kevin Costner. I generally like athletes with personality (not just boring I did this for the team crap), which is why I rooted for some of those guys (who are jerks). Jose maybe you are right I should have responded with some silence, but damn...that was crazy.

    You're right, it isn't. Vick, T.O. and Pedro Martinez are assholes well before their ethnicity is considered.

    You did fine. What were you going to do, call her a racist biggot and storm out? Shit, you are married to her daughter and why cause unnecessary akwardness at future family events. Work on her. Maybe you can help educate her.

    What are you getting into by the way? Are you somehow involved in the cockfighting incident? ha ha ha! That statement alone goes to show she is playing with 51.


    Mike Vick stinks by the way. Why on earth was he your favorite player? You his brother or family member? And T.O. is a jerkoff. Pedro however is the man. He is also my favorite athlete of all time, and IMO the greatest pitcher ever (he DOMINATED during the roid era...case closed).
    All that's sacred, comes from youth....dedications, naive and true.

    yeah she probably would of gotten the message loud & clear that sucks that it happened to you ....but i bet you see her in a different light :(...

    1. you've got some fucked up favorites. white or black, pulling for scumbags like the ones you listed sucks.

    2. personally, i think "stop being a racist" would have been perfectly fine. barring that, i think you responded completely fairly. well done.

    Yeah, I wanna hear more about this Kevin Costner thing.

    Otherwise, just point out that no race has a lock on stupidity. After all, the most famous drunks and drug users in baseball are pretty much all white.

    Vick I just liked b/c he was different, and was exciting to watch there are others who had comparably bad attitudes. As a Cowboy fan I thought it was awesome when TO came in an put the football on our star, it was hilarious so I rooted for him since then. Besides, he doesn't get into any crazy off-field stuff (I guess the OD thing last year, but who knows the real story) really so that's not really a big deal. Pedro is a great athlete and a great man...he will probably be the prez of the DR someday, and that would be awesome. Nash is sweet b/c he called us out on the war in Iraq like 6 years ago, and Dirk is, well, Dirk. Besides Vick I think my heart is in the right place with these players.

    no i don't agree but that's just me, the woman is a racist & probably will be for life ....IF i state IF after that comment my kids would not be spending weekends at grandma's house i'm talking about my kids now ...

    she does suck at certain things A LOT, but she is my mother-in-law so I think I have an obligation to at least make it be known that this is not cool.

    It sounds to me like the this problem is much more deeply rooted with your mother in law.............it sounds like she has a repressed desire to experience a black schlong in all its beauty first hand............this racism is just a shallow attempt by her to cover her real desire……for the black beauty!!! ;)
